A little rain did not dampen our Sunday out in Waikiki but it did make us want some comfort food or warm bowl of soup. I have always wanted to visit Shingen on Beachwalk so we decided to go there for some warm noodle soup. Shingen is famous and always busy because they make their own Buckwheat noodles with flour imported from Japan. The Soba noodles are thin unlike the larger noodles used for Udon. We entered Shingen and were immediately face to face with the noodle making machine which is located in the entrance. This is a tiny restaurant with only about 6-8 tables. We were seated at a communal table located in the middle of the dining room. The service here was excellent with a young staff that smiled, explained the menu and provided some history of the noodles. We started with Edamame ($5.80) which are salted soy beans. They were good but I thought the price was a bit high for a small bowl of beans. The Poke ($13.20) was more like Sashimi. Thinly sliced fresh Ahi Tuna served with a bit of seaweed and onions. The Ahi melted like butter and was super delicious. The Prawn Tempura Roll ($8.80) was good. Liked the large piece of shrimp down the middle. I went with a warm Kamonan Soba ($17.80). Buckweat noodles served with thinly sliced pieces of duck and green onions. The noodles and broth were delicious. I mean really good. Made me forget that I just paid $18 for a bowl of noodles. The Kashiwa Namban Soba ($13.80) was served with large pieces of chicken and green onion. Really liked the noodles and service here and would not hesitate to return.
