MIYAJIMA
JAPAN
Visiting Miyajima was an incredible adventure and day. We began by taking the train from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial to a small town where we boarded a boat and passed by The Great Torii which at high tide appears to be floating in the sea. This is the image seen on countless travel ads for Japan and it is truly a wonderful sight. The Torii is the boundary between the spirit and human worlds and when you visit Miyjima there definitely is a spiritual feeling around the place. Our boat ride seemed fast like maybe 20 minutes and then we were at a small port where hundreds of locals were waiting to board our vessel back to reality. We however seemed to travel back in time as our heels hit the dirt road leading up to the Temples. We took a cab up the hill and our guide and others walked. Once you reach the Temple, there is the smell of incense and a feeling of calm. Even though there are many people around you seem to feel alone at times here and it was nice. This was a place where I would like to visit again and spend much more time walking the small streets, enjoying the sights and meeting the people.
