MIYAJIMA AND THE GREAT TORII - JAPAN

MIYAJIMA
JAPAN

Visiting Miyajima was an incredible adventure and day.  We began by taking the train from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial to a small town where we boarded a boat and passed by The Great Torii which at high tide appears to be floating in the sea.  This is the image seen on countless travel ads for Japan and it is truly a wonderful sight.  The Torii is the boundary between the spirit and human worlds and when you visit Miyjima there definitely is a spiritual feeling around the place.  Our boat ride seemed fast like maybe 20 minutes and then we were at a small port where hundreds of locals were waiting to board our vessel back to reality.  We however seemed to travel back in time as our heels hit the dirt road leading up to the Temples.  We took a cab up the hill and our guide and others walked.  Once you reach the Temple, there is the smell of incense and a feeling of calm.  Even though there are many people around you seem to feel alone at times here and it was nice.  This was a place where I would like to visit again and spend much more time walking the small streets, enjoying the sights and meeting the people.

LUNCH NEAR MOUNT FUJI - JAPAN

LUNCH NEAR MOUNT FUJI
JAPAN

Stopped by this beautiful little lake a few miles out from Mount Fuji.  The small restaurant located on the second story of a gift shop served up some really delicious Japanese food.  The presentation of this meal with the steaming pot of soup was incredible and the food was great.

MOUNT FUJI - JAPAN

MOUNT FUJI
JAPAN

Mount Fuji is located on Honshu Island and it is the highest mountain in Japan at 12,389 feet.  This is an active volcano around 60 miles from Tokyo and its snow capped peak can be seen for miles.  We took a tour up the mountain to a rest stop where I enjoyed some hot chocolate and my girls played in the snow.
