ALOHA MAMACITA

ALOHA MAMACITA
NIMITZ BUSINESSS CENTER
1130 N NIMITZ HWY #C110
HONOLULU, HI 96817

Aloha Mamacita started as a Food Truck and then graduated to brick an mortar in Waipahu.  They now have a location in the Nimitz Business Center near Best Buy and Home Depot.
The location is very difficult to find and in fact I was going to throw in the towel and leave the Business Center when my Wife looked on the map and found that the restaurant was located in THE BACK of Nimitz Business Center.  We went to the back and still could not find it until we saw a mini sign next to a Korean Church.  Believe me this is one of the strangest places I have seen in Honolulu.  You walk from and industrial complex into a dark quasi Japanese Garden with a Koi Pond and in the corner is a small door that is Aloha Mamacita.  We arrived to a small line with one of the workers on the phone giving directions on how to find the place.  I too called when we were looking around but the line was always busy.  Probably with more people calling for directions.  The menu is small and most every item contains Birria which is a marinated beef.  The Birria Tacos with Consomme ($15) was my favorite.  Three Tacos served with a delicious consommé that that has a nice kick of spice on the back end.  I liked the balance of cheese and meat.  The Tacos had a nice crunch and were not soggy.  The Onions and Cilantro added more flavor.  These were probably the best Birria Tacos I have tried in Hawaii.  The Street Tacos ($3 each) were tiny and contained the Birria meat less the cheese.  Also served with Consomme.  Go for the Birria Tacos and skip the Street Tacos.  The Birria Bomb Bites ($9) are balls of the Birria Meat and Cheese with more Consomme.  These are really heavy and filling.  After eating the Birria Taco I could only eat one of the Bites.  Probably would not order these again and stick with the Birria Tacos.  Once you can find Aloha Mamacita you will enjoy some really good Birria Tacos.

JOLENE'S MARKET - BIRRIA TACOS

JOLENE'S MARKET
CHINATOWN CULTURAL PLAZA
100 N. BERETANIA ST #105
HONOLULU, HI 96817
808-540-1000
HOURS:  Daily 10AM -8PM

OK my third visit to Jolene's Market and the third time being overpowered by a single spice.
Don't know what it is but it surely is not my favorite.  I think the Birria Tacos ($15) are made with their same Smoked Brisket which I had last week and said the same thing about the spice.  These are pretty good Birria Tacos though.  Did not see or taste any cheese which was different from most Birria Tacos I have had lately.  The dipping sauce was super oily but had a nice flavor and spicy finish.  Liked the way the tortillas were cooked.  A bit crispy.  I would eat these again and again if it were not for that one overpowering spice.  Gotta find out what it is. One bite and my Wife will know.  I'll bring some home for her next time.

EL MEXICANO

EL MEXICANO

HOURS:  Daily 11AM - 3PM / 5:30PM - 9:30PM / Closed Thursday

Going off the low carb diet for you guessed it - Tacos.   Just had to try some of the Birria Tacos at the new El Mexicano restaurant on Waialae Avenue.  Entered to find the place empty but super clean.  Our temperatures were checked, hands sanitized and contact tracing info taken before sitting down at a table near the window.  Waitress was super friendly with excellent service and attitude.  They even introduced themselves by name and made sure we were enjoying our meal.  I went for the Birria Tacos ($18).  The Tacos arrived with the Onion and Cilantro on the outside which is great for presentation but I wanted them inside the taco.  Wish I would have requested more Cilantro and Onion to go inside the Tacos.  The Shredded Beef was moist and flavorful and I enjoyed the flavor of the Tortillas.  The Consume however was a bit bland and tasteless.  Really did not add much to the flavor or enhance the Tacos.  Despite this I liked the Tacos and would go back and enjoy them again.  My Wife did the Taco Trio ($15) with  Carne Asada, Carnitas and Al Pastor with Pineapple Tacos.  We both liked the Carne Asada best with the Carnitas coming in second.  The Al Pastor was good but a bit dry.  Nice amount of meat in all of the tacos and the flavors were better than most restaurants in Honolulu.  Would love to return to try a Carne Asada Burrito.  We liked the food here and the service and attitude of staff was just as good!
