IOLANI FAIR 2016

IOLANI FAIR 2016
IOLANI HIGH SCHOOL

Iolani School is not only the greatest educational institution in Hawaii it has one of Hawaii's best Fairs each year in April.  While the kids come for the rides and games most of us hit the Iolani Fair for the great food booths.  There are dozens of booths with everything from Fried Noodles to Turkey Legs.  I usually hit as many as my stomach can possibly take.  This year I had to have a Waffle Dog but made the mistake of ordering the Deluxe version with cheese.  All the cheese ruined the flavor of the dog.  Not too good.  My favorite of the evening was the Grilled Corn on the Cob.  Super sweet.  We enjoyed Kauai Shrimp with Sweet Potato Gnocchi.  Loved the Shrimp, not so keen on the Gnocchi.  The Tacos were good and the Shave Ice hit the spot on this warm evening.  Just a great time cruising the food booths, playing some games and shopping for fresh vegetables and snacks.

My time this year at the Iolani Fair was limited to a visit to the Gourmet food tent and walk through the games and merchandise tents.  The Fair is just not the same without my Daughter holding my hand and playing all the games with me.  Now she works in a booth at the Fair and when her shift ends, she runs away with her friends leaving Mom and Dad to entertain themselves.  We know what to do when she abandons us.   Head straight for the food tents.  This Fair is known for the "food" and it does not disappoint.  Just have a bunch of script (money) to spend.  No money exchanges hands here.  You must first purchase script which are coupons with a value of .50 each.  This means a food dish costing 15 script is $7.50.  The lines that form to purchase script can get pretty long and they do accept credit cards.  Best thing to do is purchase script in advance from the school.  With script in hand we headed straight for the Gourmet food tent and quickly used up about half of the script we had purchased.  Lobster Bisque was on the menu, but it was 80 degrees and hot.  We passed on the soup.  Instead we opted for the White Clam Linguine ($9).  Pretty impressed that they cooked the pasta to order and served it with some nice clams.   The Linguine was perfectly cooked al dente and served with a light sauce and Garlic Bread.  Yummy.   The Cuban Sandwich ($7.50) was also delicious.  The pickles in this sandwich made the flavor pop.  The Fish Tacos ($7.50) looked great on the plate but really lacked flavor.  Ate one of them and had no interest in eating the second.
My Wife finished the meal with a couple of Malasadas which are sold by the thousands during this two day Fair.  I love the Iolani Fair but just miss those days carrying my daughter on my shoulders and holding her hand while walking around.

IOLANI SCHOOL FAIR

 IOLANI SCHOOL FAIR
HONOLULU, HAWAII

IOLANI SCHOOL FAIR
563 KAMOKU SREET
HONOLULU, HI  96826

My daughter loves the Iolani Fair even though she had to work in a booth here for four hours straight on her birthday.  She was happy to do it and spent many more hours eating, playing and enjoying the rides.  Eating is probably one of the best things to do at the Iolani Fair.  There are dozens of food booths serving up everything from Hawaiian Food, Korean Food, Waffle Dogs, Burgers, Gumbo, Chili, Fried Twinkies, Steak, Shrimp and Gourmet dinners and desserts.  The food booth lines can get long but many are worth the wait.  I headed straight to the Gourmet Food Tent and found a few interesting creations that were delicious.  The Beef Brisket Loco Moco ($9) included Rice, Beef Brisket, Egg, Gravy and Fried Onions.  The egg was cooked perfectly and when you broke into the yoke, it flavored the rice perfectly.  The Brisket had great flavor but was a bit dry.  Did not make a difference as this dish was delicious.  The Pasta Bolognese ($9) was also very good.  Pasta was cooked perfectly and topped with a light Meat Sauce and served with a very tasty Garlic Bread.  These two selections were winners!  Next up we tried the BBQ Corn ($3).  Wow...the corn was so very sweet and had a good BBQ flavor.  I could have eaten a dozen of these but opted to share just one with my wife.  We waited in line longest for the KC Waffle Dog.  These little Dogs are a Hawaii institution and were served in a restaurant many moons ago.  The restaurant closed but you can still find the Waffle Dogs and events and Fair's all over Oahu.  The KC Waffle Dog is simply a Hot Dog in Waffle Batter.  Served with a relish that almost tastes like Tarter Sauce.  Ended the evening right before the rain came down with a Waiola Shave Ice ($3.50).  I went with straight Root Beer and loved it.  I like spending a few hours at the Iolani Fair.  Great to see friends and my daughter having such a great time with her friends.  In addition to the food and rides we spent some time listening to some great music performed by local kids and made our way through the tents where they sell plants, logo items for Iolani and other general merchandise.  The Fair is great but bring lots of cash or a credit card.  I gave my daughter $100 and she came back for more.
