LOMBARDI'S PIZZA - NEW YORK

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA

I love Lombardi's Pizza in New York.  The original Coal Oven pumps out some delicious Pizza and on this visit for the first time, we were able to sit outside in the sun and do some serious people watching.  A glass of vino and delicious Pizza on a warm day in May.
This was perfect!

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA - NEW YORK

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA

HOURS:  Monday thru Thursday/Sunday 11:30 AM - 11:00 PM
Friday and Saturday 11:30 AM - 12:00 AM

I love Lombardi's Pizza and it is on my "must do" list every time we visit New York.  This is probably my favorite pizza because I love the crust which is thin and cooked in a coal oven.  On this visit we ordered a couple of pizzas but then saw plates of Meatballs going to the tables around us.  It looked so good so I ordered them for the table.  Grandma Grace's Meatballs ($11) made with Beef and Pork did not wow me but I liked the sauce.  They were a bit too dense and lacked a real beef flavor in my opinion.  Probably would not order these again.  I always go for the basic Margherita Pizza at Lombardi's ($21.50) for the small.  This to me is the perfect pizza with just the right amount of sauce, cheese and basil.  What puts this pizza over the top is the crust.  Perfectly cooked with slightly burnt bottom from the coal oven.  On this visit we also tried the Famous Clam Pie ($35).  Comes with a warning that you may find sand and shells in your pizza and we did.  This pizza is full of clams.  Just about all clams with no sauce.  I really think it needs some sauce as just eating all those clams gets a bit dry.  After one slice I was done with the Clam Pie.

LITTLE ITALY FOOD TOUR - NEW YORK, NY

LITTLE ITALY FOOD TOUR
NEW YORK, NY

I had tried to arrange a Food Tour of New York with Famous Fat Dave who is a dedicated Foodie, Blogger and Master of all things food in New York.  Dave's schedule did not match ours so we decided to make up our own Food Tour in Little Italy.  The goal for the day was to have a pizza, bowl of pasta, Italian Sandwich and Cannoli all at different restaurants.  The only thing we knew for certain was that we were going to start at Lombardi's for a pizza.  The rest of the restaurants were found by walking the streets of Little Italy and just looking in windows and at menus.  Each one of our Little Italy stops below has a link to the full blog post but here is a recap of one great Little Italy Food Tour.  I can honestly say that I would highly recommend this little food tour to anyone visiting Little Italy for the first time.  I think we really got lucky walking into all of these great spots.  And here is something you will not believe.  After these five stops, we stopped in Chinatown on the way home for yet another sampling of food.  This time it was Chinese.   Burp!

Stop #1 - Lombardi's Pizza.  Hands down the best pizza that I have ever tasted.  Super fresh ingredients and a thin crust that is cooked to perfection.  Lombardi's is always on my New York must eat list.

Stop #2 - Rich to Riches.  This was totally unplanned and nowhere on our list.  We had walked out of Lombardi's and across the street there as a sign that read "Dozens of Delicious Flavors and 3 Shitty ones".  We looked at the place and could not figure out what they were selling.  We ventured inside and found that this was a Rice Pudding place.  Kind of like Baskin Robbins but with Rice Pudding.  The signage here alone is worth the visit but the Rice Pudding was also pretty darn good.

Stop #3 - Pellegrino's.  We were in search of a bowl of fresh made pasta and we were not disappointed at Pellegrino's.  Enjoyed a bowl of fresh Fettuccine with Clams.  The food and service here was great.

Stop #4 - Alleva Dairy.  This deli is over 100 years old and they serve up one of the best Italian Sandwiches I have ever tasted for $8.50.  Loads of hand cut Italian Meats, Provolone Cheese and Roasted Peppers.  Loved the history, look, feel and smell of the place and the food!

Stop #5 - Caffe Roma.  Voted New York's Best Cannoli.  We enjoyed a cup of coffee, hot chocolate and Cannoli and this great little spot off Mulberry Street.  Great service too.

Lombardi's is my favorite pizza period.  It is always on our first thing to do list when visiting New York.  Seems we always go for lunch and this time was not different.  Arrived just after noon and was greeted my two hosts that smiled and engaged me in a little conversation.  Nice because on other visits the place was so packed that everyone was just scrambling to get people in and out.  This was a bit slower pace and more enjoyable.  We were seated in the Wine Room located downstairs from the main dining room.  It is a small room where you can really get to know your neighbors seated just inches away.  I did not waste anytime and ordered the Original Margherita Pizza ($17.50 small).  The pizza arrived in a few minutes and I had my fix.  Ohhhh…..so good.  This is the perfect pizza.  Great crust, sauce and toppings.  This is like the In n' Out Burger that I love so much because you can taste every single ingredient in the burger.  At Lombardi's you can taste the sauce, the cheese, the crust and basil.  Each element complimenting the other in perfect pizza harmony.

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA - NEW YORK CITY

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA
NEW YORK, NY

Lombardi's is the first pizza parlor in America with great history and pizza.  The original coal fired brick oven from the 1800's still cooks every pie.  We started with the House Salad.  It was big enough for all three of us with a good bit left over.  Then it was time for the Lombardi's pizza.   I love this pizza.  It is a thin crust that is slightly charred on the bottom.  The toppings are quality and fresh.  We ordered half sausage and pepperoni and half cheese and basil ($22).  This large pie has around eight huge slices that quite easily fed a family of three with leftovers.  This was Shirley's favorite pizza spot on earth but after trying Grimaldi's, she said she prefers the Grimaldi pie because of their crust.  She said the Lombardi crust was soggy on the inside.  Keli and me voted for Lombardi's so Lombardi's wins the Santos Pizza Challenge.  Kind of amazing, we went to Lombardi's on Thanksgiving Day and it was packed like every other day.  Singles, families, locals and tourists were all enjoying this great pizza for lunch.  Wonder if they had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that same night.  We did!
