LOMBARDI'S PIZZA - NEW YORK, NY

Friday and Saturday 11:30 AM - 12:00 AM

Lombardi's is my favorite pizza period.  It is always on our first thing to do list when visiting New York.  Seems we always go for lunch and this time was not different.  Arrived just after noon and was greeted my two hosts that smiled and engaged me in a little conversation.  Nice because on other visits the place was so packed that everyone was just scrambling to get people in and out.  This was a bit slower pace and more enjoyable.  We were seated in the Wine Room located downstairs from the main dining room.  It is a small room where you can really get to know your neighbors seated just inches away.  I did not waste anytime and ordered the Original Margherita Pizza ($17.50 small).  The pizza arrived in a few minutes and I had my fix.  Ohhhh…..so good.  This is the perfect pizza.  Great crust, sauce and toppings.  This is like the In n' Out Burger that I love so much because you can taste every single ingredient in the burger.  At Lombardi's you can taste the sauce, the cheese, the crust and basil.  Each element complimenting the other in perfect pizza harmony.

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA - NEW YORK CITY

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA
NEW YORK, NY

Lombardi's is the first pizza parlor in America with great history and pizza.  The original coal fired brick oven from the 1800's still cooks every pie.  We started with the House Salad.  It was big enough for all three of us with a good bit left over.  Then it was time for the Lombardi's pizza.   I love this pizza.  It is a thin crust that is slightly charred on the bottom.  The toppings are quality and fresh.  We ordered half sausage and pepperoni and half cheese and basil ($22).  This large pie has around eight huge slices that quite easily fed a family of three with leftovers.  This was Shirley's favorite pizza spot on earth but after trying Grimaldi's, she said she prefers the Grimaldi pie because of their crust.  She said the Lombardi crust was soggy on the inside.  Keli and me voted for Lombardi's so Lombardi's wins the Santos Pizza Challenge.  Kind of amazing, we went to Lombardi's on Thanksgiving Day and it was packed like every other day.  Singles, families, locals and tourists were all enjoying this great pizza for lunch.  Wonder if they had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that same night.  We did!

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA
32 SPRING STREET
NEW YORK, NY

O.k. I admit it. We have been in New York for four days and already visted Lombardi's twice. The second visit was at the request of Shirley as she was craving the pizza 48 hours after our first visit. Like the Acme Oyster House in New Orleans, you want to run (take a fast cab) to Lombardi's the minute you arrive in the city. This place is fantastic.

Lombardi's is the home of the first coal oven pizza in America. Today the same coal oven cooks your pizza to perfection. The restaurant has been featured on the History Channel, The Food Network and The Discovery Channel. Zagat Survey rated the pizza as "Best on the Planet".

We would have to agree. This is not deep dish or pizza with thick dough and so much on top that you cannot taste the ingredients. Lombardi's is a thin crust pizza topped with San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese and a little basil. We added some sausage and pepperoni and were in heaven. The crust is light and tasty. You can taste all of the ingredients. The sauce, the cheese, toppings and basil. Just a perfect combination of flavors. The crust gets lightly toasted from the coal oven which is great. We ordered a side Ceasar Salad with our pizza. A single salad will serve four people. They are huge. I asked for sardines on my salad and the waitress brought us a huge plate of sardines. I am talking maybe twenty or more. While they do charge extra for the sardines, you get enough for an army on the plate.

Lombard's is all cash. No credit cards accepted. Expect to pay about $20 for a very large pizza and $8.50 for the Ceasar salad. During our first visit the wait was about 30 minutes. Our second visit around 4:00 in the afternoon was wait free. You may want to go before or after the lunch and dinner hours to avoid a wait. Even if you do wait - it is worth every mintue. A visit to New York would not be the same without stopping at Lombardi's for a pie.
