Oops I did it again would be a good way to start this post.  Once again I went for the high dollar restaurant because it was expensive and difficult to get a reservation.  I have tried numerous times over the past three years to get a reservation at Gary Danko when visiting San Francisco.  Each time there was nothing available.  I called a few weeks in advance of my trip and got a recording.  I left a message with the dates that I would be in San Francisco.  The same day I received a call back from a very nice and polite lady from the restaurant.  She confirmed my dates and said that she could get me in on a Wednesday at 9:30 PM.  That is past my bedtime I told her.  She laughed but said that was all that was available.  I booked the 9:30 time and requested an earlier time if available.   We dined at 9:30.  Arrived to find the place packed.  Every seat in the restaurant and bar were filled with diners and drinkers.  I approached the busy bar and got the attention of the bartender.  To my surprise, she smiled and said just one second and then came around the bar to my side and asked me what I would like to drink.  How is that for service.  The bartender leaves the back of the bar and walks in front to serve me.  This was first class.  The hostess was all business.  Not really cracking a smile for us but hugging and smiling for all the people that she seemed to know.  We enjoyed a glass of wine at the bar and then were seated in one of the dining rooms across from the bar.  The couple next to us was celebrating an anniversary and we ended up talking with them because our tables almost touched.  Not much privacy here.  The waiter arrived and presented us with the menus while water and bread were served promptly.  We went for the Chef's Tasting Menu with wine for $180 per person.  Yes.....I am an idiot, but this is a once in a lifetime dinner I rationalized to myself.  Since we were going first class, I ordered one ounce of Black Sea Caviar at $95.  The Caviar was served on some great tasting toast that was soaking in butter.  We were brought a plate with a small piece of beef as an appetizer.  It was good.  Next came an incredible Risotto with Crab.  This was probably the best thing we ate here all night.  Rich and creamy with large pieces of crab.  Perfecto!  The salmon and beef dishes were o.k. but if you figure what you are paying for these small entrees, I don't think they were worth it.  The cheeses were o.k. at best.  Nothing special.  Same for the dessert.  This was really a disappointment for the price.  Service was exceptional until we made a joke about Ricky Boobie to our French waiter.  He wanted to kick us out.  My take on Gary Danko is go there if someone else is picking up the tab.

A small immigrant family moves to San Francisco from Lucca, Italy in 2005.  Their young son is a baker by trade so they buy a local bakery near the Little Italy section of the City by the Bay.  The mother begins to cook pizza and some of her other favorite recipes from Italy.  The smells of home cooked Italian Food begins to permeate the bakery and customers begin asking for a sample.  Next thing you know the son who was the baker gets an allergic reaction to wheat flour and can no longer bake long hours in the kitchen.  The family adapts by turing the bakery into a small neighborhood Italian restaurant where the mom would simply cook her family recipes from Lucca.  Forward to 2013 and Caffe Baonecci has a cult like following on Yelp and has won numerous awards for Best Pizza, Best Neighborhood Restaurant and many more.  I booked a reservation using Open Table's website and we arrived on a warm 80 degree San Francisco day.  Weather was so nice that we requested a table outside on the front patio.  We were immediately greeted upon arriving by a smiling young man.  His smile was from ear to ear.  Inviting and infectious.  Welcome he said.  How are you.  I have a table outside in just one minute for you.  Please sit at the bar for  a moment.  We sat at the bar and he asked if would would like a drink.  Sure we said.  A beer and a glass of red wine.  No problem and our drinks were on the table in seconds.  As soon as the drinks arrived we were taken to the outside tables and sat at a table with an awkward slope.  Our waiter who was the owners son still smiling took us through the menu and talked about some of his favorite dishes.  Wow...I said.  Just give us an appetizer, pasta and pizza that you would recommend.  I am leaving this up to you I told him.  No problem he said with a big smile.  I'll take care of you.  First up was the Tagliere Antipasto Toscano ($17.95).  This was a delicious platter of Italian meats.  Prosciutto de Parma, Salame, Coppa, Mortadella, Pecorino Cheese and olives plus warm and delicious bread.  Next up was Lasagna with Meat Sauce ($16.95).  Meaty Lasagna with home made Bolognese meat sauce, parmigiano and a béchamel sauce.  Loved the Lasagna but just wish there was more tomato sauce.  Next time I order this (and I will) I will request a side of sauce.  The pizza suggested by our waiter was the Pizza Monte Bianco ($19.95).  San Marsano Tomatoes, Fresh Mozzarella, Prosciutto Parma and a scoop of Mascarpone Cheese.  Whats not to like about these simple fresh ingredients.  I took one bite and was in heaven.  The thin crust is PERFECT and the Prosciutto Parma was sweet and salty with the Mascarpone Cheese adding a silky moist texture on top of the ham.  This is pizza the way i like it.  This is thin crust.  This is pizza where each topping pops and provides flavor.  You can taste every ingredient in the pizza.  Nothing is masked with cheese and dough.  This is the bomb.  Best pizza I have ever eaten in San Francisco.  Loved it!!!!  While we were enjoying this great meal, the owners son joined us for some conversation.  He talked about his Mom and Dad and how proud he was of them.  He talked about moving to the United States from Italy and the trials of opening up your own business.  I would tell him that I loved the food and he would say "thats' my mom in the kitchen" and smile.  You could tell he loved his family and the business.  This is in his blood.  Our conversation moved to more personal subjects like the fact that he was just married and spent 14 days on the Island of Oahu where we live.  This brought more smiles and memories of his weeks in paradise.  Truly a remarkable host and great "face" for the restaurant.  After talking for a bit our host excused himself and returned with a chocolate ice cream ball covered in chocolate.  This is from my Mother he said.  We were so full that one bite of this was not on my mind.  After one taste we finished the entire dish.  Me and my guest were blown away by the food and hospitality here and both said this would be a "tradition" every time we visit San Francisco.  I cannot wait to return for more pizza.

Could not pass up trying El Faro when I read on the window that it was the first restaurant to serve up a burrito in San Francisco back in 1961.  This is where the "Mission Style" burrito originated according to El Faro.  While La Cumbre in San Francisco may disagree with that as they say La Cumbre originated the large Mission Style Burrito.  Now I have eaten at both establishments and I can say that I liked the El Faro Burrito better.  I went for the Happy Burrito with Carne Asada Steak.  The gal at the counter makes the burrito when you order it.  She filled mine with rice, refried beans, lettuce, sour creme, guacamole and some hot sauce.  The thing must have weighed in at 4 pounds because it was heavy.  Wrapped like a fine cigar tightly in aluminum foil.  I finished half and threw in the towel.  Liked the flavor of the meat and refried beans.  The sour creme and guacamole added flavor but the hot sauce was a bit bland.  Sat in the upstairs dining room looking down at the customers and counter.  Enjoyed a cold brew with my burrito and was very happy!

Stopped into Mel's Drive In for a quick breakfast while in San Francisco.  No complaints here.  Food and service were excellent.  I went for the Huevos Rancheros and my friend had the Biscuits and Gravy.  While my Huevos Rancheros looked like a mess, it was really good when you got down to the tortilla and mixed it all up with the eggs and refried beans.  Added some hot sauce and loved it.  Waitress here was pleasant and smiling.  Service was exceptionally quick and friendly.  Would not hesitate to return here for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
