NYHAVN 17 - COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

 NYHAVIN 17

Our first evening in Copenhagen had us taking a walk from our hotel through a nice park.  We did not have a map or plan.  Just walked and kind of followed the joggers and bikers until we literally fell upon a beautiful little waterfront row of restaurants.  It was approaching 8:00 pm and we thought it would get dark but to our surprise, the sun stayed up to almost 11:00 pm on this summer day.  We walked the entire length of the walkway looking at what restaurants had the most guests and a menu that we wanted to try.  Each restaurant is somewhat different with some featuring Steak and Seafood, Italian Food and a variety of Denmark favorites.  We settled in at Nyhavin 17 because I liked the champagne display and the Wife liked the look of the Salads and fact that it was pretty full with both locals and tourists.  I immediately ordered the Nicolas Feuilattte Champagne (DKK 210.00).  Thats about $16 U.S. per glass and the minimum number of glasses is two.  Not knowing what to order, we asked the waitress and she was more than willing to help out and suggested what she said were some Danish favorites.  We started with the Avocado and Smoked Salmon Salad (DKK 155.00).  This was a nice salad with a light citrus dressing that everyone liked.  The Salmon was also exceptionally fresh and delicious.  The Smorrebrod (DKK 210.00) included three choices of toppings on bread.  We went with the Marinated Herring, Skagen Shrimps and Roast Beef.  These little open face sandwiches  were very good and filling.  Glad we shared them between the three of us.  My Daughter loved the Roast Beef and pretty much destroyed it on her own.  I had a small bite and agreed it was delicious.  The Marinated Herring was probably the best Herring I have ever eaten.  So fresh and moist.  It did not have a fishy taste at all and when eaten with the Red Onion and Capers was heaven.  The Skagen Shrimps were probably are least favorite of the three as it did not pack the unique flavors like the other two.  The Fish n' Chips (DKK 189.00) was awesome!  Lightly battered fresh Cod that was so bright white and moist.  Served with some really tasty French Fries that were cooked to crispy perfection.  I enjoyed our dinner on the waterfront at Nyhavn 17.  The young staff was good and spoke English and it was fun to watch and listen to the kitchen staff cook and clean to American Disco music while they worked.  Our table had a view down into the underground kitchen and we all got a kick out of watching the cook dance while he worked.  While dancing he did put out some great looking and tasting food.

NEW FUJITSU COMMERCIAL - KEEPING HOMES AND SCHOOLS COOL

KEEPING HOMES AND SCHOOLS COOL
NEW FUJITSU TELEVISION COMMERCIAL

Our sincere thanks to Gerard Elmore and Amber Skelton from KGMB for creating another fun Fujitsu Air Conditioning Commercial.  After doing the Coolest Man in the World and Ready to Party spots we had to tone it down and get back to good old family basics.  It was really fun working with Gerard who has done hundreds of local and national commercials.  He is very talented and a pleasure to work with.  We threw some curve balls to him during the shoot and he reacted calmly and rolled with what we had to work with.  This commercial features Keli and Rich Miano along with the Coolest Man in the World.  Filmed on location at St. Patrick's School, Sacred Hearts Academy, Rich Miano's home and the Admor HVAC warehouse in Honolulu.  Really want to thank Sister Ann Decosta and the kids from St. Patrick's for filling the classroom with a great group of kids and for allowing us to film at the school.  Big thanks to Betty White from Sacred Hearts Academy for allowing us to film on her campus with just a moments notice and to Rich and Lori Miano for letting us invade their living room to film the scene with Rich.

PHO CA DAO

HOURS:  Daily 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM

After a recent visit to Wall Mart on Keeaumoku Street we left our car in the lot and walked across the street to the new 808 Center where Pho Ca Dao is located.  I did not want to eat Vietnamese Pho on this day because it was just too hot.  Happy to see that the menu here included a wide variety of meat, vegetable and noodle dishes along with Banh Mi Sandwiches which I love.  The restaurant was pretty empty but very clean which I liked.  We were greeted by a smiling waitress who brought us menus and some much needed ice water.  Ordered the Spring Rolls ($7.75) which are cut into small pieces and served with lettuce, fresh mint, rice noodles and the House Sauce.  Added a little hot sauce to my Spring Roll and wrapped it up like a burrito.  The Ground Pork and Vegetable filling was very good and the fresh lettuce and mint added great texture and flavor.  The Green Papaya Salad ($9.25) was absolutely delicious.  One of the best Grenn Papaya Salads I have ever tasted.  So light, fresh and tasty.  Liked the Shrimp but really did not understand why they placed four pieces of Pork on the plate.  The Combo Sandwich ($6.95) was filled with large slices of Steamed Pork and Ham.  I ordered the sandwich without the mayo and added jalapeƱos.  Loved the fresh bread and flavor of the sandwich but next time will request more of the Pickled Daikon and Carrots.  The was a really good Banh Mi for $7.  Overall we loved our visit to Pho Ca Dao and would highly recommend the place.  I cannot wait to return and try some more menu items and the Pho.  Would love to see a small family business like this succeed and prosper.
Update 8/16 - Returned to Pho Ca Dao and once again enjoyed the Spring Rolls and Green Papaya Salad.  Both were as I remember - delicious.  The Pho here had an odd taste to the broth but my Daughter enjoyed it.  The Beef Chop Suey was pretty bad with a large bed of dry noodles and bland vegetables and beef.  Really needed some seasoning or sauce especially for the noodles.

MARIPOSA

Thought it was time to get back and try Mariposa at Neiman Marcus since we were doing some
shopping at Ala Moana Center.  Was quite surprised to walk in on a Saturday night at 7:00 PM
and find the place empty.  The hostess asked if we would like to be seated inside or outside.  One
look at the sun setting over Ala Moana Beach and we said outside.  This was a perfect evening with
warm weather, a calm breeze and beautiful ocean view.  For location and ambiance on this night, I
give Mariposa an "A".  Service throughout the night would be a "B" even though the waiter spilled
a glass of water all over the table and my pants.  The food was a "C".  My assessment of Mariposa
and why they are not busy is simply the food.  It just is not that good for the price and at dinner you
do not get those big delicious Popovers that are served at lunch.  The smaller Popovers or Bread
served with a jam sweetened butter were good though.  Started with the Kahuku Corn Chowder ($11).
My Wife said she would be splitting the soup and the waiter happily said that he would have the
kitchen split the bowl into two servings.  This was nice.  Everyone loved the Corn Chowder and thought
this may have been the best dish of the night.  The BBQ Tiger Prawns ($18) tasted great but why there
was a large clump of Guacamole on the plate amazed me.  You cannot dip the Prawns in the Guacamole
and there was nothing to scoop it up with.  Its like just taking bites of Guacamole.  The Citrus Beet
Gazpacho did not work on the plate and added nothing to the flavor of the dish.  The Fennel Seared Ahi
Salad ($17) was just o.k.  according to my Wife.  She said the Ahi was tasteless and the greens and
dressing were dull.  I ordered the Lobster Linguine ($30) and it was a mess to look at and not very good.
The sauce was prettytasteless and watery.  It did not go with the Squid Ink black pasta at all.  The meat
was from the lobsterclaws and was not that tasty.  Throwing a bunch of spinach and sliced garlic into the
linguine really did not seem right.  Then the two giant capers on top made no sense and could not add
anything to the flavor.  This dish was a total mess and I cannot believe a Chef would create and serve
it like this.  Really a big $30 disappointment.  My Daughter went for the New York Strip Steak ($39).
It was cooked to perfection but lacked seasoning.  The French Fries however were fantastic.  The
Asparagus was also cooked perfectly and tasted good.  Overall we all were pretty disappointed on the
flavors of the food for the price.  The night however was absolutely beautiful and spending time with
the family watching the sunset was priceless.
