LA TOUR CAFE - FRENCH ONION SOUP

When my co-workers said they were going to La Tour Cafe for lunch I jumped online to see if they had any low carb options.  The only thing I could find was a few salads and French Onion Soup.  Went for the soup and it was pretty good.

Wasn't real sure what I was going to get when I ordered th "Pho"ggie and La Tour Cafe ($15.90).  Menu said Wagyu Beef, House-made "Pho" Mayo, Thai Basil, Red Leaf Lettuce, Shaved Onions, Cilantro and Fresh JalapeƱo.  A Spin on Vietnamese Pho Soup which I love.  I ordered the sandwich without the Pho-Mayo but now I am wishing I would have tried it because I have no idea what Pho-Mayo is.  Should have asked.  The Sandwich was delicious.  Lots of Beef.  I could swear there was Cucumber on the bottom of the sandwich and the JalapeƱos and Cilantro gave it a pop.  My Wife enjoyed the Meatball Banh Mi ($11.90).  Both sandwiches served with a small salad.

I was not a big fan of La Tour Cafe when they opened up their first location on Nimitz Highway.  Now that they have a new location closer to home I may visit them more often.  The new restaurant in located in Aina Haina were Foodland Farms is the anchor tenant.  We stopped in for lunch and waited in line at the counter.  With only one cashier it was kind of slow but the gal behind the counter was all smiles and really made people feel welcome.  I went for The Italian Sandwich ($10) which comes with a small salad and house made pickles.  The sandwich was very thin for an Italian Sandwich.  The Sesame Brioche bread was delicious.  Really could not taste the individual meats which included Salami, Sopressata, Mortadella and Prosciutto.  The only thing I could taste was the Arugula and Balsamic Dressing.  The Arugula was really overpowering all of the other flavors.  A little more meat and less or no Arugula would have been nice.  The side salad was good and we loved the house made pickles.  My Daughter enjoyed her Chicken Pesto Panini ($10) and also liked the side salad.  This is a nice little neighborhood spot where you can pick up a quick quality meal.

I had not visited La Tour Cafe since they opened in 2011.  Back then I tried basically the same items on the menu that we ate on this visit.  Probably a mistake because I was not to high on this place back then and this visit did nothing to make me want to come back for a third time.  We were at the Lowe's Hardware store next to La Tour and rather than park in front of the restaurant because it is often full we left our car at Lowe's and just walked over for a quick lunch.  I again went for the Italian Sandwich ($10) and once again was not impressed.  My Wife, Daughter and myself all tried the sandwich and we all puckered after our first bite because the sandwich was drenched in a mayonnaise based tangy sauce.  Could not really taste the flavor of the meats or cheese.  The bread however was perfect.  The Meatball Bahn Mi ($9.60) is a favorite of my Wife.  I however like meatballs with a little more flavor and maybe some sauce.  This sandwich seemed a little dry to me.  The bread however was perfect.  The Margherita Pizza ($10) looked really good coming out of the oven.  Nice thin crust and good ration of sauce and cheese.  The only gripe on this pie is that they put lemon zest all over the pizza as a topping.  Lemon zest on a pizza my friends does not work.  The crust however was perfect.  La Tour Cafe is not a bad place.  Think I need to try a few other menu items before I write them off.

LA TOUR CAFE

LA TOUR CAFE
HONOLULU, HAWAII

We have been driving by La Tour Cafe for months.  It looks like a very large restaurant from Nimitz Highway.  After a visit to Costco next door, we found a parking spot and went on in.  Wow...not what I was expecting.  La Tour Cafe is a small restaurant with a take-out counter.  There are around 12 tables, a small take-out deli section and a flat screen t.v.  No frills here.  We approached the counter to find a limited menu which is good.  They serve a few soups, salads, Tartines, Panini's, Sandwiches and Flat Bread Pizzas.  I tried The Italian Sandwich ($7.50).  Thin slices of salami, sopressata, mortadella and proschiutto with Harvarti on French Egg Bread.  Served with a house salad and home made pickles.  The bread was the star of this sandwich.  So fresh and light and crunchy.  Liked the meats, italian sauce and pickles.  This was good.  The Meatball Banh Mi Sandwich ($7.50) was a Vietnamese style sandwich with chicken meatballs, pickled carrots and fresh cilantro served on a crunch French Baquette.  Again, the bread was the star.  So fresh and perfect texture and crunch.  I thought the meatballs were tasteless, but my better half loved the sandwich and wants to go back again for another.  The Mac and Cheese ($4) was a huge hit with Keli.  Yummy, great, cheesy and awesome were some of her comments.  I have heard that the burgers are good here.  The La Tour Burger ($8.50) comes with Wagyu Beef, caramelized onions, salsa verde with Havarti.  Can't wait to try this one after my diet.  While at the counter the cashier recommended the Macaroons for which the restaurant is known for.  We tried a chocolate and a coffee.  Not bad, but don't think I would order one again.
