THE BUENA VISTA - SAN FRANCISCO, CA

THE BUENA VISTA

SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94109

Growing up going to The Buena Vista was a tradition every time I visited the City.  Now with my Daughter living there, we can visit often as a family.  The food is really good here so book lunch or dinner and you will not be disappointed.  The Irish Coffee is the BEST and not to be missed on a cool San Francisco day or night.

I have been coming to the Buena Vista for over 30 years.  Always one of my first stops when visiting the city.  A trip here would not be the same without at least one Irish Coffee.  This is where Irish Coffee was invented and nobody does it better than the Buena Vista.  Service is excellent and the food here is really good too.  So nice to enjoy one of my fave spots with my Wife and Daughter!

HOURS:  Monday thru Sunday 4:00 AM - 11:00 PM

Very happy to see that one of my favorite places in San Francisco now has a satellite version at the San Francisco International Airport.  The Buena Vista which is home to the World's Best Irish Coffee is in Terminal 3 and definitely worth a stop if you have time while traveling through San Francisco.  The restaurant/bar was packed when I arrived with patrons enjoying food, beer and cocktails while catching a Major League Baseball Playoff game.  Think the Dodgers lost the game while I was mowing down a bowl of Clam Chowder ($8.59).  The Chowder was nothing to write home about.  Super bland and full of potatoes and very little clams.  Might be one of the most bland and tasteless Chowders I have ever eaten.  Even the Bacon lacked flavor.   Disappointed to say the least.  My Irish Coffee was delicious and pretty much the same as you get at the original Buena Vista near Fisherman's Wharf.  Oh...my friend ordered the Bar Wings with Siracha Sauce ($15.99).  These were the most disgusting Wings on earth.  The sauce was so bad that I could not even finish one wing.  My friend left half his order on the plate as did the guy sitting next to us eating the same thing.

Readers of this blog know that I am not a big bar guy.  Don't hang out in them and do not frequent too many unless they have really good food.  There is one bar however that I ALWAYS make it a point to stop at the minute I arrive in San Francisco.  The place is The Buena Vista and I have been going here for over thirty years now.  The Buena Vista does have really good food but I come here for one thing only.  The Irish Coffee.  This is probably the only place I drink Irish Coffee too.  Just something about starting a trip to the City by the Bay with an Irish Coffee at The Buena Vista.  It is now in my blood and history.  Absolutely love it.  The hot coffee, Whiskey and Cream is the perfect combination on a cool day or night in the City.  I will always return to The Buena Vista for an Irish Coffee whenever traveling to San Francisco.

For me a trip to San Francisco is not complete without a stop at The Buena Vista.  I have been hitting this local pub for over 30 years and always order just one thing.  The Irish Coffee.  Day or night - Hot or Cold (and it is usually cold) I have a least one Irish Coffee every time I visit San Francisco.  The place is always jam packed at night and the food here is really good if you want to get something to eat.  There are a few tables in the bar and a counter area in the back for eating.  Most people crowd the bar standing or sitting on the bar stools.  The bartenders line up the glasses and pour the Irish Coffee a dozen at a time.  I love the flavor of this drink and there is a little something in there that gives you a little kick.  Perfect drink for pre or post dinner in the City.

THE IRISH COFFEE STORY

The historic venture started on the night of November the 10th in 1952. Jack Koeppler, then-owner of the Buena Vista, challenged international travel writer Stanton Delaplane to help re-create a highly touted "Irish Coffee" served at Shannon Airport in Ireland. Intrigued, Stan Accepted Jack’s invitation, and the pair began to experiment immediately.

THE IRISH COFFEE IS THE ONLY THING I DRINK AT THE BUENA VISTA

Throughout the night the two of them stirred and sipped judiciously and eventually acknowledged two recurring problems. The taste was "not quite right," and the cream would not float. Stan’s hopes sank like the cream, but Jack was undaunted. The restaurateur pursued the elusive elixir with religious fervor, even making a pilgrimage overseas to Shannon Airport.
Upon Jack’s return, the experimentation continued. Finally, the perfect-tasting Irish whiskey was selected. Then the problem of the bottom-bent cream was taken to San Francisco’s mayor, a prominent dairy owner. It was discovered that when the cream was aged for 48 hours and frothed to a precise consistency, it would float as delicately as a swan on the surface of Jack’s and Stan’s special nectar.
Success was theirs! With the recipe now mastered, a sparkling clear, six-ounce, heat-treated goblet was chosen as a suitable chalice.
Soon the fame of the Buena Vista’s Irish Coffee spread throughout the land. Today, it’s still the same delicious mixture, and it’s still the same clamorous, cosmopolitan Buena Vista. Both…delightful experiences.
