IOLANI FAIR

IOLANI FAIR
583 KAMOKU STREET
HONOLULU, HI  96826
808-943-2339
EMAIL: fair@iolani.org

My time this year at the Iolani Fair was limited to a visit to the Gourmet food tent and walk through the games and merchandise tents.  The Fair is just not the same without my Daughter holding my hand and playing all the games with me.  Now she works in a booth at the Fair and when her shift ends, she runs away with her friends leaving Mom and Dad to entertain themselves.  We know what to do when she abandons us.   Head straight for the food tents.  This Fair is known for the "food" and it does not disappoint.  Just have a bunch of script (money) to spend.  No money exchanges hands here.  You must first purchase script which are coupons with a value of .50 each.  This means a food dish costing 15 script is $7.50.  The lines that form to purchase script can get pretty long and they do accept credit cards.  Best thing to do is purchase script in advance from the school.  With script in hand we headed straight for the Gourmet food tent and quickly used up about half of the script we had purchased.  Lobster Bisque was on the menu, but it was 80 degrees and hot.  We passed on the soup.  Instead we opted for the White Clam Linguine ($9).  Pretty impressed that they cooked the pasta to order and served it with some nice clams.   The Linguine was perfectly cooked al dente and served with a light sauce and Garlic Bread.  Yummy.   The Cuban Sandwich ($7.50) was also delicious.  The pickles in this sandwich made the flavor pop.  The Fish Tacos ($7.50) looked great on the plate but really lacked flavor.  Ate one of them and had no interest in eating the second.
My Wife finished the meal with a couple of Malasadas which are sold by the thousands during this two day Fair.  I love the Iolani Fair but just miss those days carrying my daughter on my shoulders and holding her hand while walking around.

HOAKALEI COUNTRY CLUB EASTER BRUNCH

HOAKALEI COUNTRY CLUB
KEONEULA BLVD
EWA BEACH, HI  96706
808-853-4343
HOURS:  Monday 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Tuesday thru Sunday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM

I cannot say enough good about the staff or golf course at Hoakalei.  This is one of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses on Oahu and they have an Executive Chef who has elevated the food to to the PGA Pro level.  The entire staff works with a feeling of Aloha, which quite frankly you find less and less in Hawaii these days.  Forget the fact that there is no clubhouse and the kitchen is nothing more than a portable trailer.  This place puts out some of the best food on the Island and I think they have some of the best sandwiches which makes it a secret gem if you are on this side of the Island during lunch time.  Easter Brunch here was perfect.  The setting behind the temporary Pro Shop  was under a small canopy and large tent.  The weather was picture perfect and it was warm but very comfortable outside.  They had a man singing and playing acoustic guitar under the tent and he was amazing.  Helped make this day so relaxing and enjoyable that none of us really wanted to leave.
The food was excellent.  We especially liked the Herb Crusted Striploin, Crab Claws and Linguine with Mahi Mahi.  My Wife liked the Apple Salad so much that she requested the recipe from the kitchen.  You could tell that this was a buffet that stressed quality over quantity.  There was a wide variety of food selections and everything we tried was good.  The only thing that we did not try is the Ahi Poke.  It was dark black in color and did not look appetizing at all.  Normally Ahi Poke is vibrant red which indicates freshness.  The desserts were all above par and the Cheesecake was one of the best we have ever tasted.  After a great meal we hijacked a golf cart and drove all 18 holes of the golf course.  This was the first time seeing the entire course for my Wife and Daughter.   When we returned back to the Pro Shop they actually wanted to drive the 18 holes again because they enjoyed it so much and thought it was beautiful.  Beautiful it is - and the food is good here too!

LA TOUR CAFE

HOURS:  Sunday thru Thursday 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Friday and Saturday 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM

I had not visited La Tour Cafe since they opened in 2011.  Back then I tried basically the same items on the menu that we ate on this visit.  Probably a mistake because I was not to high on this place back then and this visit did nothing to make me want to come back for a third time.  We were at the Lowe's Hardware store next to La Tour and rather than park in front of the restaurant because it is often full we left our car at Lowe's and just walked over for a quick lunch.  I again went for the Italian Sandwich ($10) and once again was not impressed.  My Wife, Daughter and myself all tried the sandwich and we all puckered after our first bite because the sandwich was drenched in a mayonnaise based tangy sauce.  Could not really taste the flavor of the meats or cheese.  The bread however was perfect.  The Meatball Bahn Mi ($9.60) is a favorite of my Wife.  I however like meatballs with a little more flavor and maybe some sauce.  This sandwich seemed a little dry to me.  The bread however was perfect.  The Margherita Pizza ($10) looked really good coming out of the oven.  Nice thin crust and good ration of sauce and cheese.  The only gripe on this pie is that they put lemon zest all over the pizza as a topping.  Lemon zest on a pizza my friends does not work.  The crust however was perfect.  La Tour Cafe is not a bad place.  Think I need to try a few other menu items before I write them off.
