ROCK OF AGES ON BROADWAY - NEW YORK CITY

ROCK OF AGES
ON BROADWAY
NEW YORK, NY

Decided last minute to jump over to another theatre after watching the play "Wicked".  Grabbed some forth row center seats for Rock of Ages.  This is a tribute to 80's rock and featured Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister fame.  The play is filled with 80 classic rock from Journey, Styx, Foreigner and other classic rock bands.  The story is fun, funny and filled with blazing guitar solos and the Arena Rock us old guys grew up with.  I was lucky to get the sun glasses Dee Snyder wore in the show autographed.

THANKSGIVING PARADE - NEW YORK CITY

THANKSGIVING IN NEW YORK

We are blessed and Thankful for our day in New York.  We awoke to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Kind of tough to get a real good look.  We ended up not seeing too much.  We took the opportunity to cruise the city while all the crowds were along the parade route.  Went to the Top of the Rock.  This is the top of Rockefeller Plaza.  Incredible views of central park in one direction, Hudson River and the Empire State Building.   We had lunch at Lombardi's Pizza.  Yes on Thanksgiving and the place was jammed packed as usual.  Love walking around the streets here.  Wish we could spend another week just walking the different neighborhoods and enjoying the sights and food.  I LOVE NEW YORK!

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA - NEW YORK CITY

LOMBARDI'S PIZZA
NEW YORK, NY

Lombardi's is the first pizza parlor in America with great history and pizza.  The original coal fired brick oven from the 1800's still cooks every pie.  We started with the House Salad.  It was big enough for all three of us with a good bit left over.  Then it was time for the Lombardi's pizza.   I love this pizza.  It is a thin crust that is slightly charred on the bottom.  The toppings are quality and fresh.  We ordered half sausage and pepperoni and half cheese and basil ($22).  This large pie has around eight huge slices that quite easily fed a family of three with leftovers.  This was Shirley's favorite pizza spot on earth but after trying Grimaldi's, she said she prefers the Grimaldi pie because of their crust.  She said the Lombardi crust was soggy on the inside.  Keli and me voted for Lombardi's so Lombardi's wins the Santos Pizza Challenge.  Kind of amazing, we went to Lombardi's on Thanksgiving Day and it was packed like every other day.  Singles, families, locals and tourists were all enjoying this great pizza for lunch.  Wonder if they had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that same night.  We did!

JUNIORS CHEESECAKE - NEW YORK CITY

JUNIORS
NEW YORK, NY

Many people say Juniors has the best Cheesecake in New York.  I had to find out for myself so we strolled on into the Juniors massive complex right of Broadway.  The place is part restaurant, part bakery and part Cheesecake fast food restaurant.  They have a production line out front where you can buy whole pies without entering the restaurant. There is also a bakery where you can buy the pie by the slice.  We bought a slice and walked outside to a small table overlooking the street.  Three forks dug in together and together we all said "yum".  Juniors Cheesecake is dense and thick like the Carnegie Deli, but has a bit of a sweeter taste.  Shirley voted for Juniors over Carnegie Deli.  I think they are equal.

NATHAN'S HOT DOGS - CONEY ISLAND, NEW YORK

NATHAN'S HOT DOGS
CONEY ISLAND, NY

It has always been a dream to visit the original Nathan's Hot Dog Stand in Coney Island.  This is the home of the Nathan Hot Dog and the World Hot Dog Eating Competition.  I cannot believe that Joey Chestnut at 68 of these dogs in one sitting.  I had two and was stuffed for the day.  One regular Dog with just mustard and one Regular Dog with grilled onions and relish.  The Dogs are about $2.75 each and they are delicious.  The Nathan Dog has a snap when you bit it.  Full of flavor too. Just a great hot dog.  It was worth the 45 minute ride on the subway to Coney Island.  There were only a handful of people in the restaurant.  Mostly firefighters, policeman and EMS.  Not too many people make their way to Coney Island in the winter.  It is a summer destination.  We checked out the boardwalk and rides.  Very old and a little run down.  The beach was surprisingly nice.

THALIA RESTAURANT - NEW YORK CITY

THALIA
NEW YORK, NY

We had just finished seeing the play Wicked and then decided to catch the 8:00 pm performance of Rock of Ages.  This meant we had a few hours to kill between shows.  It was getting dark and very cold so my girls picked the first place on Eight Avenue that had empty tables and looked warm.  We entered Thalia without knowing anything about the food or prices.  Just went in and requested a table for three.  We were quickly seated as it was around 5:30 pm and quite empty.  I was amazed with the scale and beauty of the space.  Lots of money went into building this restaurant.  We started with a Caesar Salad ($9).  Basic.  The Yellowtail Sashimi ($12) was something different.  Three small slices of raw tuna that was white in color from the dressing.  Served with like a fennel and sauerkraut base and topped with Tobiko.  Not the best use of raw tuna but eatable.  We also enjoyed a half dozen of raw oysters ($13.50).  Three Blue Point and three Kumomoto Oysters.  The Blue Points were large and tasty.  The Kumomoto's were small and very salty.  For our main dishes, Keli had the Spaghetti ($16).  Fresh made pasta with a very good sauce.  The pasta was cooked perfectly and this dish was very good.  We all tried it and liked it.  Shirley tried the Crab Soup ($10) to go along with her Caesar Salad.  Said it was just O.K.  I opted for the Lamb Shank ($23).  This huge piece of lamb was served on a bed of butternut squash risotto.  The dish was very lamby.  The sauce dull and the risotto average.  Not too good.

CARNEGIE DELI - NEW YORK CITY

CARNEGIE DELICATESSEN
NEW YORK, NY

A trip to New York would not be complete without a stop at the Carnegie Deli.  This is one of my favorites spots to eat.  We usually get on of their huge sandwiches, but this time opted for a late night slice of Cheesecake ($12).  This cheesecake is thick and dense.  Full of flavor and covered with Strawberry glaze and fresh strawberries.  Truly sinful and delicious.  Love this stuff big time.  The staff has been very friendly during our past two visits.  Really enjoy this place for cheesecake or the big sandwiches.
