POACHED SEA BASS WITH QUAIL EGG

POACHED SEA BASS WITH QUAIL EGG
BEST DINNER IN AGES
AT HOME

We had one of the greatest meals of my life for my beautiful brides Birthday.  This Sea Bass dish rivals anything I have enjoyed at Babbo's or Gordon Ramsey.  We tried a variation of a dish we loved at Gorden Ramsey's in New York and scored a home run.  The evening started with the freshest of Ahi Sashimi.  So red and glimmering that it went down like butter.  Topped with Tobiko that Keli just loves.  The Sashimi was the freshest ever.  So silky.  You would not believe the flavor.  Our next appetizer was Escargot.  Large snails in a garlic butter.  Simply delicious.  Our entree blew the socks off the meal.  Simply stated one of the best fish dishes I have ever enjoyed in my life.  I have dined at some of the best restaurants in America and this dish rivals anything.  Poached Sea Bass stuffed with a Quail Egg and served with a puree of vegetable from the poaching liquid.  When you cut into the fish, the Quail Eqq burst onto the plate providing a flavor burst.  The puree adds another kick that makes this the dish of the year for me.  Email this blog for the recipe.  I promise this will be a favorite.  Staying at home for special occasions really has it's advantages.  This entire meal was less than $50.          TASTE OF HAWAII FAVORITE.

BELLA MIA PIZZARIA

BELLA MIA PIZZARIA
HONOLULU, HAWAII

We were driving towards downtown Honolulu on Beretania when we saw a cute little new restaurant called Bella Mia.  The entire restaurant seating area is on a lanai open to the neighborhood.  Really nice set up but there is only enough parking for around four cars.  This is a huge problem.  We could not get into the lot and traffic behind us nearly rear ended me.  I wanted to throw in the towel right then and there, but my better half convinced me to park in a apartment complex where she knew the owner.  We parked and walked a block and crossed Beretania Street.  We decided to try a salad, pasta and pizza to get a good variety of what Bella Mia has to offer.  All of the dishes came at once after a short wait.  The salad was delivered last.  The Supreme Pizza ($14.95) was 14".  They also serve a smaller 10" and larger 16" version.  I found the pizza to be very bland and overloaded with way too much cheese.  To be honest, I have had better pizza out of a frozen box.  The Pasta with Meat Sauce was just o.k.  At $8.95 it is a pretty good deal.  There was enough for two people on the plate.  The Antipasto Salad ($8.95) was good, but I hate the fufu lettuce they use.  It is the kind with the bitter black and purple stuff.  Liked the dressing and deli meats.  This is the same Bella Mia as the one in Kaimuki but with a smaller, less expensive menu.  I would probably not return here because of the lack of parking and taste.
UPDATE:  THIS RESTAURANT HAS CLOSED.

HOOTERS HONOLULU

HOOTERS
ALOHA TOWER
HONOLULU, HAWAII

When some business reps visited town and offered to take a few of my employees to lunch they chose Hooters for a light and healthy meal.  I like Hooters but know I am getting old when I visit the place for the Fried Pickles and Chicken Wings rather than to check out the girls.  Don't get me wrong, I still love checking out the orange shorts and what is in them, but now I like to just eat and run and leave the waitresses to the others.  One of my favorite "unhealthy" meals is from Hooters.  It consists of Fried Pickles, 3 Mile Island Hot Wings served "naked" which means without the breading and an order of Training Burgers.  The Fried Pickles are served with Ranch Dressing.  These things are delicious and addicting.  Woof down one Fried Pickle and you will be hooked.  They are lightly breaded so you get the pickle flavor first.  I love the un-breaded "naked" wings at Hooters.  They are lighter and to me have more flavor.  I order the hottest ones available and pile up the napkins as the heat begins to cover my hands and mouth.  The Training Burgers are four small burgers with cheese and pickle.  I only can eat two max.  The burgers are served with thinly sliced onion rings that after the pickles and wings are almost impossible to eat.  One thing I hate about Hooters Honolulu is that many of the tables are sticky.  I literally had to place down paper towels so I could stand it.

STEAK AND LOBSTER DINNER AT HOME

STEAK AND LOBSTER
DINNER AT HOME

My lovely wife cooked up a wonderful steak and lobster dinner.  Served up with some delicious fried sweet potato that she cut with a mandolin and fried in a fryer.  This was a lot of work but delicious.  I requested the smallest steak possible and only had a few bites.  This meal was great because we were together as a family enjoying the food and moment.  I am the luckiest man on earth.

SABRINA'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT - HONOLULU

SABRINA'S ITALIAN
HONOLULU, HAWAII

I have been driving by Sabrina's for many years yet never once have eaten there.  The restaurant is tucked away in a very small strip type mall near the University of Hawaii.  Parking is tough and I really have never met anyone who has recommended it.  I was craving some good pasta, so I started to do some research and read reviews on the Internet before making a reservation.  I found that most people either love or hate the place with the majority really liking it.  With that in mind, I called for a reservation on a Saturday evening.  The answering machine came on and Sabrina said to leave your name and number to make a reservation.  An hour or so later Sabrina called me back.  I requested a reservation between 6:00 and 8:00.  She said that 6:00 would be better and to make sure I bring a bottle of wine since they do not serve alcohol.  She also took the time to tell me different parking options around the restaurant.  Very pleasant and nice phone call.  We arrived at 6:00 to find the place empty.  We were quickly met by Sabrina who welcomed us and asked how we heard about the restaurant.  She was genuinely interested in making us feel at home.  This was a great start to the evening.  The waitress quickly uncorked my bottle of Italian Borolo (no corkage fee) but did not offer my lovely bride water or another beverage.  We started with the Caprise Salad ($9).  Fresh Mozzarella Cheese, Tomato, Basil and Olive Oil.  This was light, fresh and very good.  The Antipasto Plate ($10) was a huge portion of meats, a little cheese, toasted bread and an incredible vegetable mixture.  I placed the meats and cheese on the bread and topped it with the vegetables.  This was fantastic.  Loved it.  We couldn't finish all the meat on the plate and the waitress offered to pack it to go.  There are a lot of pasta dishes and entrees on Sabrina's menu.  I went with the "Special" which was Lobster with Fettuccine.  I was expecting a lobster tail on the plate and got a very small empty one with no sign of lobster in sight.  One bite of the dish and I found the lobster.  It was finely diced into a delicious and light creme sauce that covered the pasta.  To me this dish was a home run.  Not too creamy, big flavor, not too heavy and just perfect.  Exactly what I was hoping for.  My bride enjoyed a huge plate of Seafood Risotto.  Filled with large clams and calamari.  She ordered without the mussels.  This dish was also fantastic but a little oily.  The flavor made up for the excess of oil on the plate.  We finished the meal with a Cannoli made fresh to order.  Sabrina was an excellent host and really made us feel at home and appreciated.  The restaurant filled to capacity by 7:30 so I am glad we arrived early. I cannot wait to return to Sabrina's to try some other dishes.  I really like this place and if it is as good the second time, it will be a Taste of Hawaii favorite.  I could not wait to return to Sabrina's to see if this place was the "read deal" Italian.  A week later I dragged the family back with me to try some different dishes.  Would this restaurant win the honor of a Taste of Hawaii Favorite?  Well.....it did!  The second visit was as delicious as the first.  We arrived early to beat the crowd and were seated at the same table as our first visit.  Sabrina arrived at our table to make sure we had a reservation.  Seems they were very busy and not letting anyone in without a coveted reservation.  She grilled the table next to use about having a reservation.  She could not remember the guys name.  Finally she asked for his phone number and went back to check it against her records.  Lucky for the guy and his date she had the phone number written down.  They were in.  While Sabrina works the tables making sure everyone is happy and monitoring the food deliveries, the sole waitress in the place (same as the one we had before) is pleasant but not really into this gig.  We started with the Bruschetta.  Small pieces of bread spread with garlic and topped with tomato, parsley and a little olive oil.  Very simple, light and delicious.  All three of us shared a single salad with Prosciutto and Parmesan. There was enough for everyone.  I loved the large, thick slices of ham and tangy balsamic dressing.  This was not too heavy and did not fill us up.  We tried the Spaghetti with Clams.  Large Clams in a garlic, wine and olive oil sauce.  This dish was great but like the Risotto dish the first time, it was far too greasy. Just too much oil.  Other than that it was great.  The fresh Pasta with Meat Sauce was delicious.  I just love Sabrina's home made Fettuccine.  It is cooked perfectly and absorbs the sauce of the dish.  The meat sauce was filled with beef and covered in a light tomato sauce.  Delicious!  Our final entree was a pasta filled with beef and cheese and covered in a tomato sauce.  I was amazed how good this was.  Nice meat filling, cheese and a tomato sauce that did not drown the dish or take away from the pasta and meat filling taste.  Everything blended perfectly.  I loved it.  For dessert, my daughter wanted the chocolate covered creme puffs.  Can't really mess this dish up.  It was great.  After two visits in two weeks I proudly name Sabrina's Italian as a TASTE OF HAWAII FAVORITE.

IN N OUT BURGER

IN N OUT BURGER
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

We just could not leave Las Vegas without grabbing the absolute best $2 Burger in America.  The In N Out burger is served fast and fresh with tomato, onion and lettuce.  Simple ingredients yet so good.  In Hawaii you can pay $5 to $10 for a burger that does not compare to the In N Out Burger.

VENETIAN HOTEL
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

Had an excellent meal at Tao in Las Vegas.  This is one of the most beautiful restaurants I have ever seen.  The 20' tall Buddah in the middle of the dining room dominates the space and is absolutely stunning.  We had an early dinner but you could tell that this place must rock at night.  The waitresses are long tall beauties and the bartenders which are female leave nothing to the imagination.  It is all there to be enjoyed.  Oh.....forgot about the food.  The meal and service were excellent.  Dishes came quickly and the flavors were delicious.  I enjoyed the Miso Glazed Sea Bass.  It was cooked perfectly.  We also had a few appetizers that were good.  I would like to go back and really concentrate on the food.  This was a business meeting and there was not much time to take in the surroundings and write about the food.
