J DOLAN'S KAHALA

J DOLAN'S KAHALA
4210 WAIALAE AVE
HONOLULU, HI
808-888-7664

J Dolan's in Kahala is a nice little neighborhood bar.  There is indoor seating and nice lanai outside where you can eat, drink and take in some sun. The menu is very small with an emphasis on the Pizza of course.  We started with the Caprese Salad which is served on a bed of Romaine Lettuce.  It was fresh, light and pretty tasty.  The Calamari was a bit bland but the Cocktail Sauce added the flavor.  As for the Pizza, we went with the Boardwalk Pie (Italian Sausage, Onions, Peppers & Garlic) and added Pepperoni and Jalapeños.  We all liked the thin crust but the sauce was pretty tasteless.  There wasn't much Sausage and the Pepperoni that we added was almost non existent.  The Peppers and Garlic was what you tasted most.  The three of us concluded that Pieology Pizza was better tasting.  Hard to believe since so many people rave about J Dolan's Pizza.  Not my fave at all.

LOW CARB SAUSAGE, PEPPERONI AND JALAPEÑO PIZZA

LUNCH AT HOME

Craving a little Pizza so I used a low carb flour tortilla to make these little Pizzas.  Topped with Tomato Sauce, Oregano, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Sausage, Pepperoni, Jalapeño, Onion and Bell Peppers.  Flavor was great but I failed at getting the entire tortilla crunchy.  Still working out learning how to use my pizza oven.

I have been dreaming about making this Pizza since Thanksgiving.  Put it together with leftovers and it was actually pretty darn good.  Cooked in my Bertello Pizza Oven.

SAUSAGE AND PEPPERONI PIZZA ON ZERO NET CARB PIZZA CRUST

LUNCH AT HOME

So my gals abandoned me today and left me to watch the Masters Golf Tournament with our dog.  Decided to make a Sausage and Pepperoni Pizza on a Zero Net Carb Pizza Crust.
Totally satisfied my pizza craving and it was delicious.

VARSITY GRILL AND BAR - HONOLULU, HAWAII

VARSITY GRILL AND BAR
HONOLULU, HI

I am going to take my time on this one because I think it is important. We drive by the Varsity after most Volleyball and Basketball games at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawaii. What a great location to have a sports bar you would think.  Just a short walk to the campus and sporting events.  In any other city this would be a landmark destination for sports fan and University supporters.  I have been on University of Hawaii Football road trips to Alabama, Florida, Nevada, Boise, Washington, Fresno, Oregon,  USC and Las Vegas.  All of these cities had one or two great sports bars where fans congregated before and after games.  Hawaii has nothing like these other cities when it comes to college bars.  The Varsity is the perfect place for such a venue but it is, quite frankly a dump.  Dirty tables, filthy menus, lousy service, loads of junk in every corner and no sense of school spirit or identity.  This is probably why the place is empty on a Friday afternoon right before a volleyball game that has 10,000 fans in attendance.  We went in because it is the closest place to grab a beer near the University and the NCAA bans beer sales at NCAA Regional events.  We sat at a table near the bar.  The waitress and some other guy see us but don't offer service.  After a few minutes, we approached the bar.  The waitress looks right at us but does not ask to take our order or say anything.  We take a menu from the side of the cash register and open it up.  The thing is greasy, sticky and disgusting.  This menu had not been washed in weeks.  It was gross.  The table was also dirty and sticky plus it was wobbling like a rocking horse.  The floor was uneven and dirty too.  We decided to order a pizza.  The menu also features burgers, sandwiches and salads but when you have such a disgusting menu filled with dirt and grease it is difficult to think about ordering the food.  Just think what the kitchen looks like I thought.  We approached Ms. Personality at the bar and again got little response.  I just blurted out that we wanted a pitcher of Coors.  Got her attention.  When she came to the bar, we said we wanted a Pepperoni, Onion and Jalapeno Pizza and some Chicken Wings.  Total for food and beer was around $40.  Not bad for Hawaii prices.  We abandoned the wobbly table and ventured outside to tables that front the sidewalk on University.  Great place to people watch.  The first table we sat at was dirty and greasy.  My friend said lets move.  We went down one table and settled into a not so dirty table next to a row of dirty tables with very ugly and dirty looking chairs.  We had our pitcher of beer so I just poured and enjoyed the refreshing moment.  The Pizza and Wings came and I was surprised.  The pizza was huge and actually looked good.  The pizza slices were cut super big so that one slice is a meal.  We both only ate two slices and there was still half a pizza left.  We gave it to the people that look like they just came from an Occupy Wall Street event.  We went back to the bar to order another pitcher of beer.  Two guys were at the cash register.  Both looked up and continued talking to each other.  My friend waited for several minutes standing right in front of these two morons.  He never was asked to be helped and we left without the second pitcher.  I loved the pizza.  Great crust that is not too thick.  A nice crunchy and lightly charred crust, just enough cheese and good toppings.  Probably one of the best pizzas in town.  Cold beer and good pizza within walking distance of the University of Hawaii.  This place should rock.  Problem is it does not.  The Varsity Grill needs a Gordon Ramsey makeover.  It needs to be cleaned up, remodeled and set up to be "THE" place to be for all things U.H.  Hawaii needs a clean, safe and fun place for students and fans.  The Varsity has the location that could rock.
UPDATE 8/12 - TOOK A LOOK INSIDE AND LOOKS LIKE THE PLACE HAS BEEN TOTALLY REMODELED WITH NEW TABLES AND CHAIRS.

KONA BREWING COMPANY - KOKO MARINA

KONA BREWING COMPANY
KOKO MARINA
HAWAII KAI, HAWAII

We have lived in East Honolulu for four years now.  Why we have never dined at the Kona Brewing Company is beyond me.  The restaurant is perched on a great corner lot overlooking Koko Marina in Hawaii Kai.  On a day like today, the views are simply beautiful.  The beauty of the water and the mountains make you feel really lucky to live in Hawaii.  We were greeted by two young hostess and quickly seated on the covered patio overlooking the Marina.  The place was pretty busy.  Pizza, Fish Tacos, Salads, Burgers and Fresh Fish were going by our table on trays and being served to happy customers who were also sampling some of the house crafted beers. I ordered a small Greek Salad ($9).  The salad included Romaine Lettuce, Tomato, Cucumber, Olives,  Onion and Feta Cheese.  Served with a nice Balsamic Dressing.  Not a bad salad but I think $9 was a bit to expensive.  I ordered a 10" Wild Mushroom Pizza for the table ($18). The description on the menu listed Mushrooms, Mozzarella Cheese, Olive Oil, Roasted Garlic, Red Onions and Roasted Red Peppers.  The pizza we received was covered in Feta Cheese and contained no tomato sauce.  The cheese was totally overpowering.  I could not eat one slice.  The Roasted Garlic was good but was just thrown on the pizza in whole cloves.  The mushrooms were non existent.  At over $5 per slice for this pizza it was a huge disappointment.  Should of asked for my money back.  $18 down the drain and we left the entire pizza on the table less a few bites and scrapings of the toppings.  My daughter enjoyed the Kids Meal Pigs in a Blanket ($7).  Two small hot dogs wrapped in pizza dough and served with some fresh fruit.  No complaints.  The Ahi Salad ($16) was a large plate of greens topped with a perfectly cooked rare Ahi Tuna that was topped with sesame seeds and a really good dressing.  This was a very good piece of fish.  Glad my wife allowed me to eat a few bites.  I will go back here soon.  There are a lot of good things on the menu and I want to give this place another chance.  Just will stay way clear of the Wild Mushroom Pizza with no mushrooms and Feta Cheese.  NOTE:  COULD NOT POST PHOTOS BECAUSE THE RED CANOPY ABOVE MADE ALL OF THE PHOTOS RED.

MERRIMANS MARKET CAFE - WAIKOLOA VILLAGE

MERRIMANS MARKET CAFE
WAIKALOA VILLAGE
BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

I was really hungry when we landed on the Big Island.  We stopped at the Kings Shops which is right across the street from the Hilton Waikoloa.  There were very few options to eat at so we hit Merrimans because the hostess out front had a nice smile.  We chose to eat inside and were quickly seated by friendly staff.  We decided to order a pizza and fish tacos and split them.  The pizza was terrible.  I have had better pizza out of a frozen box.  The little pizza was around $10.  We could not split the Fish Taco because there was only one on the plate for $15.  Really disappointed with this place.
