JERSEY BOYS
AUGUST WILSON THEATRE
245 W. 52ND STREET
NEW YORK, NY  10019

Loved the Art Deco style of the August Wilson theatre that was built in 1925 but the play Jersey Boys blew my socks off.  Wow….what a great show.  Great cast, singing, humor and story.  I now understand why this play has been playing around the world to sold out audiences.  We scored some great seats six rows from the stage on broadway.com the same day as the show.  I used Broadway.com twice during our stay in New York and both times got great seats within the first six rows.  Jersey Boys  tells the story of the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli, the small kid from Jersey who sang his way through a multitude of challenges using only his street smarts and dedication to the New Jersey streets code of honor.  The lead characters in this play are pure perfection.  They are great actors and singers.  Loved this show and highly recommend it.  There is some graphic language so I don't know if I would take the little ones.

Cruised into the Peacock Alley in the Waldorf to have some lunch.  Turns out we missed the lunch serving and the only thing available until dinner were small plates.  We shared the Angus Beef Sliders ($23).  That is over $7 per mini, little slider.  Great flavor but c'mon now.  I could have three In n' Out Burgers for this price.  I know, I am in New York and at the Waldorf Astoria.  To hang with the big boys you gotta pay the big bucks and not complain.  The Artisanal Cheese Plate ($24) was pretty disappointing.  Did not really enjoy the cheeses, especially that orange one.  Peacock Alley is a nice place to enjoy a cocktail and people watch but I would not go here for the food.

New York's Chinatown is huge.  Block after block of markets, restaurants and merchants selling just about everything you need to survive in the city.  This is a real Chinatown not a tourist Chinatown.  Home to thousands of Chinese people who live, work and play here.  The sounds, smells and sights take you to a totally different place that is unlike Little Italy which is only a block away.  We were cruising the streets and could not stop looking at the chickens, pigs and ribs in the restaurant windows.  Had to stop and sample some of these Chinese delicacies before heading back uptown to the suit and tie folks.  We picked Yee Li because of the food in the window and because it was bright and clean.  We were about the only people in the place so the service was great.  We simply pointed at the food in the window and explained we wanted a sampler plate.  While the guy did not seem to understand at first, he came through with a nice plate of food.  Char Sui, Chicken and Ribs.  We also ordered some Shrimp Fried Rice and Choy Sum.  To be honest I was so full from our Little Italy food tour that I could barely take a few bites of each dish.  Liked the Ribs best and Chicken worst.  Thought this was a nice little spot and the food and service is good.  Just wish I had some room to really enjoy this meal.
Photos after the food are various shots of New York's Chinatown and have nothing to do with Yee Li.  Just wanted to share them.

LITTLE ITALY FOOD TOUR - NEW YORK, NY

LITTLE ITALY FOOD TOUR
NEW YORK, NY

I had tried to arrange a Food Tour of New York with Famous Fat Dave who is a dedicated Foodie, Blogger and Master of all things food in New York.  Dave's schedule did not match ours so we decided to make up our own Food Tour in Little Italy.  The goal for the day was to have a pizza, bowl of pasta, Italian Sandwich and Cannoli all at different restaurants.  The only thing we knew for certain was that we were going to start at Lombardi's for a pizza.  The rest of the restaurants were found by walking the streets of Little Italy and just looking in windows and at menus.  Each one of our Little Italy stops below has a link to the full blog post but here is a recap of one great Little Italy Food Tour.  I can honestly say that I would highly recommend this little food tour to anyone visiting Little Italy for the first time.  I think we really got lucky walking into all of these great spots.  And here is something you will not believe.  After these five stops, we stopped in Chinatown on the way home for yet another sampling of food.  This time it was Chinese.   Burp!

Stop #1 - Lombardi's Pizza.  Hands down the best pizza that I have ever tasted.  Super fresh ingredients and a thin crust that is cooked to perfection.  Lombardi's is always on my New York must eat list.

Stop #2 - Rich to Riches.  This was totally unplanned and nowhere on our list.  We had walked out of Lombardi's and across the street there as a sign that read "Dozens of Delicious Flavors and 3 Shitty ones".  We looked at the place and could not figure out what they were selling.  We ventured inside and found that this was a Rice Pudding place.  Kind of like Baskin Robbins but with Rice Pudding.  The signage here alone is worth the visit but the Rice Pudding was also pretty darn good.

Stop #3 - Pellegrino's.  We were in search of a bowl of fresh made pasta and we were not disappointed at Pellegrino's.  Enjoyed a bowl of fresh Fettuccine with Clams.  The food and service here was great.

Stop #4 - Alleva Dairy.  This deli is over 100 years old and they serve up one of the best Italian Sandwiches I have ever tasted for $8.50.  Loads of hand cut Italian Meats, Provolone Cheese and Roasted Peppers.  Loved the history, look, feel and smell of the place and the food!

Stop #5 - Caffe Roma.  Voted New York's Best Cannoli.  We enjoyed a cup of coffee, hot chocolate and Cannoli and this great little spot off Mulberry Street.  Great service too.

LOMBARDI'S IS MY FAVORITE PIZZA EVER ON THIS BLOG
