I am always wondering why there are not many fresh seafood restaurants in Honolulu given all of the great fish we have in our backyard. Thirty Eight for me is a nice addition to the harbor food scene. The restaurant has a really nice space that is clean and bright. Menu contains a lot of Seafood but I wish they had more "fresh fish" options. A nice piece of Mahi Mahi, Swordfish or other local fish that is not fried would be perfect here. We started with the Cabbage Caesar Salad which is just that. Shredded Cabbage with a creamy Caesar dressing. There is dried fish in place of Anchovies, but we both agreed that Anchovies would be better. Nice salad but there was something missing to make me want to order it again. The Spicy Ahi Cracker was probably my favorite bite of the meal. Loved the fresh Ahi and while the cracker was a bit thick, this delivered on flavor. The Spanish Octopus was good but not on the same level as the Octopus I enjoyed at Amalfi in Las Vegas. The Whole Moi was a bit fishy at first but when you got into the middle the fish was moist and delicious. Wish they had a non-fried option. All in all I thought the food was ok here, but nothing really rocked my world.
Service was excellent. Hope they can add fresh Sashimi, Poke and more fresh fish options.
