PENDRY SAN DIEGO - SAN DIEGO, CA

PENDRY SAN DIEGO
550 J STREET
SAN DIEGO, CA. 92101
619-738-7000

We booked the Pendry San Diego based on reviews and their #1 ranking on TripAdvisor.  From the start I did not like this place.  Yes it is located in the middle of the Gas Lamp District which could be nice if you like large crowds, noise, music and traffic until 3am.  Just getting into the hotel on a Friday night was a mess.  Streets packed and not much room for cars to enter the valet in front of the hotel.  Valet workers here were mixed.  Some nice and helpful and others arrogant as can be.  I hated going to the valet each morning to pick up our car because of the attitude they gave.  Plus parking here is $50 per day and you have to tip these guys.  The Pendry tries to be a hip party type hotel for the younger generation which is nice.  The large bar that fronts the lobby is loud and crowded with people spilling over into the lobby on weekends.  The thump of the music carried through our room on the weekend until 3am.  Our room was small and tight and the bathroom was a jail cell and not worth the money it cost to stay here.  The refreshment center has the system where if you move or pick up any item it automatically charges your room.  I hate this system.  Never experienced any type of good or memorable service during our stay with exception when we checked out when it seemed like another hotel.  I would never stay here again but for many it may be the perfect place.  They throw pool parties with Las Vegas style cabanas and music which brings some interesting people into the hotel and pool area.  Did not try any of the restaurants in the hotel because we always could not wait to get out of the place.

Breakfast at Cafe Coyote in San Diego was not what I thought it would be.  With all the incredible Mexican breakfast specialties on the menu that we cannot get at home, I can't believe I ordered something that was terrible.  I went with the Huevos Rancheros which I usually love and order whenever I see on a breakfast menu.  The dish was TERRIBLE.  Actually uneatable.  There were no refried beans and the dish was like a bowl of tasteless soup.  I was so bummed.  Did not eat more than a few bites and through in the towel on this breakfast.  Lucky my Wife ordered something she saw another person eat next to our table.  The waiter said it was not on the menu but would be happy to make it.  Three kinds of Pork served with Guacamole, Beans, Rice and fresh flour tortillas.  This made up for some delicious breakfast burritos.

OUR BABY GOES OFF TO COLLEGE - UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

Blessed to have our baby going to the University of San Diego.  A perfect match for her we all agree.
The campus is spectacular and sits on a hill overlooking Mission Valley and the Bay.  When you walk the grounds here you cannot keep saying to yourself that "this is beautiful".  Everything seems to be in place with a sense of the past with the architecture and a sense of the future with the young student body who seems to me is 80% woman.  We feel safe here and oh so comfortable.  Our Daughter is even more comfortable with many friends from Hawaii living near her dorm.  She moved into the dorm in a weekend filled with lots of shopping and return visits to Costco, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Lowes, Trader Joes, Home Goods and various Malls.  Set her up with a tv, refrigerator, microwave and several fans because it was so hot in her room.  No A/C in her dorm if you can believe that.  After a few days we stocked here refrigerator and set up a small pantry near her desk where she has snacks, water and canned foods that can be heated and eaten in her room.  To my surprise our Daughter fell in love with her little room.  She added decorations and photos to the walls and now calls this place her palace.  Absolutely loving USD and the college life after just one week.
Difficult for me to let her go but I can see she is ready to begin a new life far from Hawaii.

IN N' OUT BURGER - SOMEWHERE IN SAN DIEGO

IN N' OUT BURGER
SOMEWHERE IN SAN DIEGO

In my mind there is no better Burger than In n' Out. Burger.  Absolutely a must every time we visit the West Coast.  Always get a single Cheeseburger with Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and Sauce.  My Wife orders the Fries extra crispy and my Daughter went with a burger with lettuce bun.  Love the fresh flavor of this burger.  Nobody does it better for under $3!

Out in Ewa and me and some co-workers were looking for a quick bite.  Headed to a Mexican restaurant but it was closed on Mondays so we went next door to Tiano's not knowing what to expect.  Found it to be a kind of local, American and Filipino restaurant.  Service was ok and the food came out fairly quickly.  The Poke was excellent.  I had the Prime Rib Sandwich because they are known for their Prime Rib the waitress said.  The sandwich was served open face.  Thought it was pretty good.  The French Fries however sucked.  Non eatable.  Tasted like old oil and they were cooked in oil that was not hot enough.  Terrible.  Some of the worst tasting Fries ever.
