Bay Cities Italian Deli is a landmark and institution because of one thing.  A sandwich.  It's called the Godmother and this little sandwich has caused traffic accidents, fights, gridlock and the business across the street to hire security guards to protect their parking spaces. I witnessed all this during our visit here and then waited 45 minutes for my sandwich.  Was it worth it?  Hell yes!!!!  The Godmother is an amazing sandwich.  I bought a few extra to take back to Hawaii and after a 6 hour flight and two hours to get home, the sandwich was still delicious.  This Godmother is filled with Genoa Salami, Mortadella, Capicola, Ham, Prosciutto, Provolone and when ordered with "the works" is topped with mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, homemade Italian dressing and pickled hot or mild peppers.  I always go hot.    The key though to the greatness of this sandwich is the bread.  The bread is amazing.  Crunchy on the outside but pillowy soft inside.  It holds up to the dressing and does not get soggy.  Even after the plane flight the thing still rocked.

BAY CITIES DELI - THE GODMOTHER SANDWICH

BAY CITIES ITALIAN DELI AND BAKERY
SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA

I felt kind of rotten taking my Dad and Heide around and eating too much.  I just had to hit a list of must do's while in L.A.  One must do was to visit Bay Cities Deli in Santa Monica to enjoy the now famous Godmother sandwich.  I love the vibe at Bay Cities.  The place is always packed and people line up at the Deli counter to order a wide variety of sandwiches, salads and entrees.  The Deli is also a Bakery and small Italian grocery store.  The place is so busy that there is a full time parking attendant to assist customers in parking.  There are tables along the front and side of the restaurant where you can enjoy these classic subs.  I love the bread, the dressing and the meats on the Godmother.  I really don't know everything that is in this sub, but it is the perfect combination.  Kind of like a Muffiletta we had in New Orleans said Heide.  That's it....I remember the taste and this was something like that.  Love this sandwich.  Another TASTE OF HAWAII FAVORITE!

BAY CITIES DELI - SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA

BAY CITIES DELI
SANTA MONICA, CA

After seeing the "Godmother" sandwich featured on the Food Network as one of the best things between bread, I just had to find the place and have a bite. My GPS took us right from Philippe in Downtown Los Angeles to Bay Cities in Santa Monica. This place is so busy that they have a parking attendant in the lot making sure people get in and out quickly. I liked this place the moment I walked in.  It is actually a deli, bakery and store. While you wait for your sandwich, you can walk the isles and see some really good food items. I took a number and waited at least thirty minutes before my number was called. I approached the counter and ordered the Godmother with The Works - mayo, yellow mustard, dijon mustard, onions, pickles, tomato, lettuce, peppers and Italian dressing. Once I had this prized possession in hand we grabbed one of the outside tables in front of the deli. The first thing you notice is the fresh baked Italian Roll. This is a delicious and chewy bread that just makes the sandwich pop with flavor. I could taste all of the ingredients. The meat, cheese, veggies and great Italian dressing. This is the bomb of a sandwich. I think the sandwich cost around $8 or $9.

THE GODMOTHER IS AWESOME!
