Portillo's has become a must go spot when I visit Chicago.  The Italian Beef Sandwich here is one of my favorite sandwiches on the planet.  I was forced to visit Portillo's twice on this trip.  The first time I was waiting in line for about half an hour.  An employee came up and took my order in line and wrote it on a bag.  I ordered an Italian Sandwich and a Hot Dog.  After waiting another half hour to get our food, we opened the bag and found an Italian Sausage Sandwich and Hot Dog.  No Italian Beef!  Rather than wait in line again we just ate what was given to us even though it was the wrong order.  The Italian Sausage with Hot Peppers, Dipped and Mozzarella Cheese ($5.90) was good but kind of depressing because I was craving the Italian Beef Sandwich so much.  The Chicago Dog with Everything ($3.09) was delicious.  One of my favorite dogs in Chicago.  Love the soft Poppy Seed Bun.  This was satisfying but not having the Italian Beef made this visit a bummer.  So what to do?  Go back on another day - Wait in line again and get than damn Italian Beef.  I did....

The Italian Beef with Hot Peppers, XT Gravy and Mozzarella ($7.14) delivered on every level.  Wow..what a sandwich.  Every component is delicious.  Plenty of Beef drenched in Gravy with a load of Hot Peppers and topping of Mozzarella Cheese.  I sat alone on the patio and savored each and every bite.  Surrounded by tourists and locals I was in a zone with me and my Italian Beef as one.

There seemed to be no-one around me, no cars and no sound.  Just me and my Portillo's Italian Beef.  One of the best sandwiches on the planet.

Portillo's is one of my all-time favorite restaurants and a MUST visit when in Chicago.  There are two things that I love and crave at Portillo's.  The Italian Beef Sandwich and Hot Dog.  My buddy can put down the Italian Beef and a Hot Dog in one sitting.  It took me two visits to enjoy these two Chicago favorites.  The first day I enjoyed the Italian Beef Sandwich ($5.45) I added Home Cooked Sweet Peppers and Hot Peppers for .50 each.  This is an incredible Beef Sandwich with tons of flavor.  The flavor of the beef shines but the bread, Au Jus and Peppers really set this sandwich apart from any competitor.  The French Bread is perfect and there is just enough Au Jus to add flavor but not soak the bread to where it becomes mush.  Each bite is heaven.  In fact when you eat this Italian Beef you go into a zone where you cannot hear anything around you.  Time seems to stand still and you are one with the Italian Beef.  The table goes silent except for a few grunts and groans of happiness.  I stare at the beef, take a bite and savor the flavor.  I am getting full but want more.  It is so good that I already am thinking when I can eat another.  Full and satisfied I come up for air and find Portillo's jam packed with patrons that I thought had vanished.   On my second visit to Portillo's I went for the Hot Dog ($2.75).  Ordered it with everything which included Mustard, Relish, Onions, Sliced Tomatoes, Kosher Pickle, Sport Peppers on a Poppy Seed Bun.  If this is not one of the best Hot Dogs in Chicago, I don't know any that are better.  The Bun, the Dog and the toppings are all fresh and full of flavor.  I love that you can taste each component individually but they all come together so well when you take a big bite of everything.  This is the kind of Dog that I could eat every single day.  A perfect symphony of fresh flavors.  I love Portillo's and highly recommend you visit one of their locations when on the Mainland.   One just opened in Buena Park, California so the next time we go to Disneyland Portillo's will be a definite stop.  Portillo's made a winter business trip to 30 degree weather worth it for me.
