My daughter actually suggested we try Wings & Things during a visit to one of her classes in Manoa.  Wings & Things is located next to Serg's Mexican Kitchen in what used to be a gas station.  There is outdoor seating where you can bring your own beer and enjoy Wings, Mexican Food and even Pizza from Boston Pizza located in the same lot.  On this day, families were enjoying food from all three restaurants.  One bite of pizza and then a burrito.  Kind of like a mini food court.  We visited Wings & Things to try their wings.  I was surprised to find an Italian Hero Sandwich on the menu so we tried one of those too.  Serg's Favorite Italian Hero ($9.95) is a nice sandwich filled with Prosciutto, Salami, Capicola, Mortadella, Provolone and Mozzarella Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Hot Cherry Peppers, Pepperoncini with a Balsamic Dressing.  Not a bad sandwich at all.  Actually enjoyed it and would go back again for another.  I asked for a Salad with my Hero and was told they were out at 11:30 AM.  Went with the Fries and they were excellent.  Almost was worth the 30 minute wait for our food.  We ordered the Signature Wings (6 Pieces for $6.99) in Mild and Hot Buffalo Style.  The wings are large and not your normal small drummets.  Flavor of the Hot Wings was good.  They had a bit of heat but nothing too hot. Pretty nice basket of wings for $7.  Served with your choice of Blue Cheese or Ranch Dressing along with some sticks of carrot and celery.  Finished the meal with a nice size Shave Ice for around $2.50.  Perfect treat on a hot Honolulu day.  I liked both the Hero Sandwich and Wings here and would return again.

I have been craving some good Hot Wings for awhile so when a friend who was staying in Waikiki asked me to join him at Buffalo Wild Wings to watch his Virginia Tech Football team play Alabama I was out the door with an appetite for heat.  I arrived to find Buffalo Wild Wings absolutely packed on a Saturday afternoon.  The dozens of wide screen t.v.'s inside the bar were playing a mix of college football, baseball and UFC.  My friend was positioned directly in front of a screen watching Virginia Tech play Alabama.  He had a cold draft beer by his side along with a pile of Wings coated with a Lemon and Pepper Sauce.  I dug into the wings after saying hi.  I was hungry for some wings and found the Lemon/Pepper dry rub to be tasty but there was no heat.  After ordering a cold one, I grabbed the menu and glanced over the various heat levels.  I did not want to over do it so I started with a small order of the "Hot" and "Wild" Wings.  The "Hot" Wings were hot and I got a nice heat sensation on the back end that stayed awhile.  The sauce was thick on these wings and had a nice flavor as did the fried wings.  I moved onto the "Wild" and immediately felt more heat in the first bite.  These babies were blazing but I could not stop eating them.  After a few of the "Wild" I went back to the "Hot" and found that I enjoyed the flavor of the "Hot" better.  I actually got pretty full eating these little wings.  My friends enjoyed Cheeseburgers and Salads and some pretty good Chips and Salsa.  Service started a little slow as our waitress was very busy.  As things settled down she provided excellent service through the duration of my stay.  Really good service considering the crowd.  I like Buffalo Wild Wings and look forward to returning.  May even kick it up a notch and try the hotter wings.

SIDE STREET INN -KAPAHULU

SIDE STREET INN
KAPAHULU AVENUE
HONOLULU, HAWAII

On an earlier blog, I vowed never to return to Side Street Inn on Kapahulu because the service was bad and we never received the Fried Rice we ordered.  Well, we were in the neighborhood recently and found ourselves parked right next door.  Since parking was paid for a few hours we decided to give it another try.  This time we were promptly greeted and seated in record time.  We started with a half order of Spinach Salad ($7.50). Fresh spinach covered in cheese, bacon, red onion with egg served with a delicious balsamic dressing.  The entire family loved the salad.  All of our plates were clean when the waitress returned with an order of Buffalo Chicken Wings ($13).  The wings were large and meaty and had great flavor and just enough heat.  Served with celery and bleu cheese dressing.  This time the Fried Rice did make it to our table.  The Fried Rice ($12) is hands down the best in Hawaii and probably the world.  Filled with vegetables and meat.  We love the Fried Rice at Side Street Inn.  It really delivers on taste every time.  I still prefer the original Side Street Inn, but Kapahulu is now back in my good graces.
