On a absolutely stunning warm and sunny day in November we enjoyed an incredible lunch at Sutro's with some of our dearest friends.  It is just amazing that this place exists just minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco.  So many times we have visited San Francisco and never left the city.  This trip our friends made sure that they drove us to some of their favorite places in and out of the city.  They have lived a lifetime here and wanted to share their history with us.  We went down small streets and saw the house they grew up in, the shop and hospital where they worked.  The schools they attended and the hilly streets where Tom would walk for hours delivering goods to the neighborhood families.  As we drove through the many neighborhoods around San Francisco a lifetime unfolded before our eyes.  Two people that grew up in the city and have now spent decades together were sharing their story and life with me and my family.  How did we get so lucky I thought.  To have friends like this and be here at this moment in time.  A moment where I have never seen them so happy and content.  A moment that delivered to me the meaning of friendship.  A moment that I will never forget.  Our journey led us to Sutro's at the Cliff House.  An amazing restaurant overlooking the Pacific ocean and filled with San Francisco history.  The restaurant views are beautiful.  As soon as you walk down to Suto's you are greeted with a panoramic view of the ocean.  The Cliff House has a number of venues to drink and dine.  There is a bar and a Bistro in addition to Sutro's.  Whether you are looking to have breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks, the Cliff House has you covered.  This is a newly renovated modern version of the Cliff House.  The original structure was built in 1863.  In its day, the Cliff House welcomed three U.S. Presidents as well as prominent San Francisco families such as the Hearsts, Stanfords and Crockers.  Wealthy San Franciscans flocked to the coast to enjoy the unique restaurant and spectacular views.  The restaurant was renovated in 1868 and soon became the meeting place for local politicians as well as less savory citizens from the Barbary Coast.  High society locals abandoned the Cliff House and it became known for some scandalous behavior, which greatly disturbed Adoph Sutro, a self-made millionaire philanthropist, and later Mayor of San Francisco who had built his estate overlooking the Cliff House.  Sutro purchased the Cliff House in 1883.  In 1887, the Cliff House was severely damaged when the schooner Parallel, abandoned and loaded with dynamite, ran aground on the rocks below.  The explosion destroyed much of the Cliff House and was heard all over the Bay Area.  In 1894 a chimney fire destroyed the building on Christmas day. (note:  history from the Cliff House websiste)  Today the Cliff House is a modern structure with lots of glass.  It has lost that old historic look and feel that you see in the old photographs.  As you enter the building there is a gift shop adjacent to the entrance.  We went downstairs to Sutro's and were greeting with a panoramic view that literally takes your breath away.  You are drawn to the floor to ceiling windows that display the magnificent Pacific Ocean.  Nothing else seems to get your attention but the view.  We were seated at a great table at the end of the dining room right next to the window.  The staff here was courteous and professional.  When we asked to split a salad and entree, the answer was yes of course.  I thoroughly enjoyed the Sutro's "Louie" with dungeness crab and shrimp.

If you want to enjoy authentic Northern Italian food in San Francisco, I would highly recommend you make a reservation at Ristorante Milano in the Russian Hill district.  This family owned business nestled in a quaint residential neighborhood  is a gem.  The place is small in size but delivers up some big flavors on their plates.  We were greeted and partially served by the daughter of the owner.  She proudly told us that the family was from Italy and these were their recipes.  Always smiling and talking with her thick Italian accent, she set the stage for what turned out to be one of the best dinners of my life.  I had a view of the kitchen from my table.  I could not take my eyes of the chef.  He was the happiest and coolest chef I have ever seen. He smiled continuously as he grabbed each ticket off the line.  He cooked with ease and shall I say pleasure.  He was his own little symphony of pasta back there.  Holding court as only a true pro can do.  We ordered a plethora of dishes to eat family style.  Everyone tasted every dish on the table and we were all glad we did.  Two dishes stand out for me.  First there was the Calamari con Cannellini.  This was the best Squid dish ever.  The squid was fresh and grilled to perfection. You could taste just a hint of the grill on the squid.  Served with Cannellini Beans that made me an instant white bean lover.  I would go back again and again for this dish.  The second dish that I would run back for was the House Made Ravioli with Butternut Squash, Butter, Cheese and Sage.  What a flavor bomb.  This rivals any pasta dish I have ever eaten.  The dish was perfection on a plate.  As each person tried the Ravioli there eyes lit up and then they smiled.  Everyone at the table was saying "wow".  Only problem was is that I wanted the entire plate but had to share.  Next time I am getting my own.  What stands out for me at Milano is the freshness of the pastas and simple ingredients.  Each dish delivered on flavor.  This is the first time in my blog history that I have had back to back TASTE OF HAWAII FAVORITES.  Ristorante Milano makes the list along with Ike's Place in San Francisco.  Looking forward to returning here as soon as possible.

As a fan of Man vs Food on the Travel Channel, we are always excited when we can visit one of the restaurants that are featured on the show.  While in San Francisco, we had to destinations that we wanted to visit.  The first was La Cumbre which is a Mexican restaurant that was the first to introduce large California style burritos.  The second was Ike's Place.  We paid $30 to take a taxi from our hotel to La Cumbre only to find out they do not open to 11:00 AM.  We were on a very tight schedule and could not wait so we walked about five blocks up the street to Ike's Place that opens at 10:00 AM.  There were about three people ahead of us when the doors opened.  I was kind of surprised when we walked in and found just a counter and board.  The place is pretty bare.  No tables or chairs.  I asked if they had a menu so I could examine it closely.  No menus I was told.  Order from the board or from the website.  We were here for the Kryptonite Sandwich that was featured on the television series Man vs Food (video below).  At $19.91 we figured it would be enough for our family of three.  While the Kryptonite was not listed on the board we asked the cashier if it was available and she said yes.  I wanted to order another sandwich so we could experience different tastes but the wife said no.  The Kryptonite was enough.  Boy was she right.  The kitchen cut the sandwich in half at our request and we had two huge halves that took us two days to finish.  The Kryptonite Sandwich contains; Two avocados, Beer Battered Onion Rings, Corned Beef, Extra Pepper Jack Cheese, Ham, Mozzarella Sticks, Pastrami, Pesto, Roast Beef, Salami, Stuffed Jalapeño Poppers and Turkey.  All between some really fresh and delicious bread with lettuce and tomato.  In a word this was "heaven".  You could really taste every single ingredient.  The meats exploded with flavor.  You just cannot get a sandwich like this in Hawaii.  Nothing comes close.
This is a TASTE OF HAWAII FAVORITE!
