After checking into the Hyatt Regency Maui, I asked the front desk clerk if they had an Italian Restaurant.  She said "yes" and directed us to Son'z.  Turns out the place has three pasta dishes.  I went with the Seafood Fra Diavolo ($45).  Yes that is correct, forty five dollars for a plate of pasta.  I thought to myself boy this better be good.  Well the pasta was good but all of the seafood was overcooked and dry.  The lobster, shrimp and fish all were like rubber.  The pasta however was cooked perfectly and the sauce had some flavor.  Ate this dish in a huge and loud dining room that overlooks a pond with some Swans in it.  In the background was probably the worst live singer I have ever heard.  The guy just added to the background noise of the echoing conversations of all the diners.  My friend enjoyed the Prime New York Steak Diane ($45).  Don't understand why you have to smother a good steak in sauce.  Service here was very basic with the waiter rushing over a few times to fill our wine and check on us.  Other than that, I probably would never dine here again.  Way too expensive, noisy and not that good.

Basically just crashed at the Hyatt Regency Maui after a day watching the professional golfers at Kapalua.  Check in was ok, but there was no Aloha spirit or feeling of welcoming.  The room was nice.  No complaints.  What I don't like about the Hyatt Regency Maui is the size.  It is massive with a huge indoor/outdoor lobby that is really dark at night.  If the winds kick up the entire lobby area is deserted as it was on the night we were here.  The place has an entire shopping wing complete with its own Macy's Department Store if that is your cup of tea.  Not for me.  The hotel has a lot to offer and I recommend you check out their website for more info.

When in Kapalua for the Hyundae Tournament of Champions you must stop into the Ritz-Carlton Hotel where the players and media stay.  You can catch all of your favorite golfers and the entire crew from the Golf Channel hanging out at this great hotel.  We enjoyed some cocktails and pupu's in The Alaloa Lounge which is located just past the lobby.  Service was good here and the food was just o.k.  For the price you pay, I expected more.  Disappointed with the lack of flavor of the Ahi Poke.  This Poke lacked seasoning and sauce with flavor.  Lots of onions and some cubed Ahi Tuna.  Liked hanging out here with the golf crowd.  Met golfer Jordan Spieth in the lobby and he was friendly and happy.  He was heading out dinner.  Would of bought him a drink but the guy is only 20 years old.

HYUNDAI TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS - KAPALUA, MAUI

HYUNDAI TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
KAPALUA, MAUI

Took the 20 minute flight from Honolulu to Maui and spent a beautiful January day on one of the most beautiful golf courses on the planet.  The Plantation Course at Kapalua is spectacular.  While it is a bear to walk because of all the hills, this day was worth every calorie burned walking and one that I will not soon forget.  We arrived early to watch the Pro Am Practice Round held on the Thursday before the Hyundai Tournament of Champions begins on Friday.  The reason I like to go on Thursday is that it is the only day where you have a lot of access to the worlds greatest golfers and a small crowd that allows you to get up close and even talk with the players.  This day was epic when it comes to getting autographs.  We secured signatures from almost the entire field.  Adam Scott, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Rory Sabbatini, Bill Haas, Webb Simpson, Jordan Speith, Brandt Snedeker and Matt Kuchar to name a few.  Players like Kuchar, Speith, Dufner, Snedeker, Jonas Blixt and D.A. Points were especially gracious.  Brandt Snedeker was signing my hat and using my pen.  He continue to use the pen to sign other autographs.  He remembered it was my pen and went to give it back to me.  He paused and took off his golfing glove that he had wore during his round.  He signed the glove with my pen and then asked me if I would trade the pen for the autographed glove.  All while smiling and laughing.  I took the signed glove and found another pen.  Another moment was with Adam Scott.  Just talking with him for a minute and then meeting his caddy Steve Williams.  Steve is one of the best if not the best in golf history.  Caddying for Tiger Woods and winning multiple Masters and then caddying for Adam Scott and winning yet another Masters.  Steve was humble and gracious.  Took time to sign several items and take a photo with me.  Another moment was with Matt Kutcher.  Kuch as he is called walked up and asked how we were doing.  He signed autographs for everyone in our small group without rushing and then posed for photos with his great bright smile.  Kuch was incredible and I will always respect him for the way he treats his fans.  Jason Dufner while always reserved and quiet signed items with a slight smile and posed for a photo.  Sang-Moon Bae a Korean golfer was also humble and gracious as he greeted us.  Boo Weekeley stopped to sign for us and answered every question with a "yes sir or no sir".  Very humble man with tons of class.  One of my favorites of the day was Jonas Blixt.  Jonas was extremely friendly and really took his time talking with the fans.  He stayed the longest and really seemed to enjoy chatting up the crowd.  Always smiling and laughing, this guy is awesome.  Zach Johnson pulled off the cart path when he saw us standing and holding items to sign.  Pulled his cart up to us and happily signed for us.  There was a tall guy with Zach who had and even larger crowd around him.  I did not know who is was so I asked.  Turned out it was Yankee Pitcher Andy Pettitte who was probably one of the nicest and most humble guys on the course.  Andy signed autographs and posed for pictures with a smile and treated everyone so nicely.  This guy is a class act in my book and I am not even a Yankee fan.  The final big moment for me was meeting Jordan Spieth.  Jordan is only 20 years old and he is tearing up the PGA Tour.  He signed autographs and posed for photos with a huge smile and treated us like friends.  We caught up with him off the course and he was even more gracious and accommodating.  Another class act and a future PGA Superstar.  Rory Sabbatini like Zach Johnson pulled his golf cart off the path and greeted us with three woman in his cart.  He was having fun and asked if we had a beer for the girls.  This was a day to remember and one of those times where I gotta thank the lord for putting me in Hawaii.

MATT KUCHAR WAS INCREDIBLE.  FRIENDLY, SMILING AND HAVING FUN

GRILLED MAHI MAHI - DINNER AT HOME

GRILLED MAHI MAHI
DINNER AT HOME

Love to see that the price of Mahi Mahi has dropped significantly over the past few weeks.  Cooked up some fresh Mahi and added a Ginger Sesame Crust.  Cooked on my new Weber Grill outside under a warm December evening in Honolulu.  Served with mashed potatoes and sautéed carrots, celery and Broccoli Rob.  Simple, healthy and delicious!

NEW YEAR'S EVE DINNER AT HOME

 NEW YEAR'S EVE
DINNER AT HOME

Nothing beats staying home with family on New Year's Eve.  This year was special because we celebrated a family members birthday and my daughter played Happy Birthday on the acoustic guitar.  That plus many laughs and a little champagne kept me up almost until midnight.  Celebrations in Hawaii are somewhat subdued as they have banned fireworks unless you buy a permit.  We did not get a permit and it turns out most stores sold out of fireworks.  There were a few pops here and there but nothing like other years when the skies of Honolulu shine bright with bottle rockets and some pretty spectacular home fireworks.  We were blessed to enjoy an incredible meal that incorporated many of our family favorites.  Started with some super fresh Ahi Sashimi which is a "must have" tradition in all Hawaii homes on New Year's Eve.  The Sashimi was bright red and silky.  Melted in your mouth like butter.  Dip this in a mixture of Soy Sauce and Wasabi and it is food heaven.  Next up was some Prosciutto Wrapped Mozzarella and Warm Smoked Pork that a friend gave us.  Incredible flavor in the meat.  Tasted like candy.  The Jumbo Tiger Prawns were big and full of flavor.  Served up with some Cocktail Sauce with Horseradish to give it a kick.  A family favorite is always Gyoza.  Pork and Vegetable Dumplings served with a Soy Sauce base dipping sauce.  The Prosciutto Wrapped Pears were light, refreshing and delicious.  Perfect way to end the appetizer round before our gourmet dinner that included a small Filet Mignon, Lobster Tail, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Broccoli with Hollandaise Sauce.  Wow…..this was pretty much a perfect meal.  Did not get a photo of the dessert, but it was a sinful Hawaii Mud Pie with rich and creamy coffee ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped creme and a Graham Cracker crust.  Last I remember on this night was sitting next to my wife and daughter and they were smiling from ear to ear while watching a video on the computer.  Those smiles and laughter are a blessing and what I want to remember going into this new year.
