I love Alleva Dairy in New York. In fact after two visits this is on my "must do" list every time I visit the Big Apple. I fell in love with the Italian Sandwich here but after several visits I also love the staff. Always friendly and engaging which is not the norm in New York. This is the first cheese store in America and it is now co-owned by the Actor Tony Danza so don't be surprised if you see him cutting the meats for your sandwich. Alleva Dairy hand cuts all of their meats and cheeses to order so when you order that Italian Sandwich ($11) kick back and watch these pro's cut layer after layer of meatlicious onto the best bread you have ever tasted. The bread is so good and so are the meats and cheeses. It took me two days to finish half of this massive sandwich. It was so nice having this in my hotel room and being able to go and take a bite when hungry. The sandwich keeps well so next time I may find a few in my luggage. I love this sandwich. One of my all-time favorites in life!

A trip to Alleva Dairy will now be on my "to do" list each time I visit New York. As with Lombardi's for pizza, Alleva will now be my place to eat an Italian Deli Sandwich. The Italian Sandwich here is $8.50 and is probably worth much more. If I could get this sandwich in Hawaii, I would be eating here every week. This place is a gem. A feast for the eyes and nose. The smell of fresh bread, cheese and meats is awesome. The feel of this place takes you back in time and I mean way back. The Alleva Dairy was opened in 1892 and is still family owned. We were served by one of the younger family members who carved each piece of meat and the cheese for my sandwich by hand off of large blocks. He put together the sandwich like an orchestra leader. Flawless motion from cutting the meats to adding the Roasted Red Peppers and Italian Dressing. The result was one of the best Italian Sandwiches I have ever eaten. Loved the bread, the meats, cheese and peppers. What really made it work was the Italian Dressing. Really delicious.
