PARKERS LIGHTHOUSE - LONG BEACH, CA

We booked a lunch for my Mom at Parkers Lighthouse in Long Beach but she was not feeling well and had to go to the hospital.  Had lunch with my Sister, Brother, Wife and Daughter and then we all went to the Long Beach Veterans Hospital where my Mom was admitted.  Love the food here.  The Shrimp and Lobster Taquitos are some of the best I have ever tasted.  I could honesty eat four servings of just these and be happy.  I had the Seafood Cobb Salad with Crab and Shrimp.  It was delicious!  Perfectly chilled and fresh with lots of crab.  Also enjoyed the Steamed Clams and Calamari.  My Brother LOVES the Garlic Cheese Bread and believe me it is good.  Everything was good here once again and the service was excellent!

MAMA MANOA

MAMA MANOA
2740 E. MANOA ROAD
HONOLULU, HI  96822
808-888-4392
HOURS:  Monday thru Saturday 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM
                 Sunday 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM

UPDATE: NOV, 2018 - Had to close Mama Manoa on Dec 1, 2018.  Nothing to do with the concept or food rather a business partner that would not put in the hours to work and manage the business.  Rather than continue to put up with the non professional antics and behavior, I decided it was in the best interest of my family to walk away from this investment.  I realized a dream of bringing a great little bistro to Manoa that pays tribute to Hawaii athletes.  In the process I met some incredible people, athletes, celebrities and just great people that made this venture very worth while.  Very proud of the restaurant and have no regrets.  Just wish I had chosen a better partner to operate the business.  Truly believe if I had the place would be a success for many years to come.

I love Mama Manoa.  Hands down the best Pizza and Chicken Wings on the Island.  Visited for dinner with friends from California and we were not disappointed.  Started with the Mama Balls ($4).  These Garlicky and Cheesy Dough Balls are delicious and served with a side of Marinara Sauce.  The Mama Manoa Antipasto Salad ($16) is huge and was enough for our table.  Filled with Capicolla, Supersata, Prosciutto, Salami, Provolone, Artichokes, Onion, Tomato, Olives and a delicious Balsamic Dressing and Reduction.  Also loved the Pickled Vegetables that top this salad.  The Garlic Wings ($15) are huge and delicious.  Mama Manoa serves the Wing and Drumette so these Wings are larger and meatier than most places.  Went with an order of Hot Wings ($15) and they delivered on flavor and heat.  The Rich Miano Italian Sandwich ($15) is huge and is by far my favorite sandwich in Hawaii.  All the Italian Meats, Cheese with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion and a delicious Balsamic Dressing.  Love this sandwich!  Served with large side of Fries.  Mamas Meatballs ($15) are served in a cast iron skillet and covered in Mamas Gravy and a dollop of Ricotta Cheese.  The Meat Balls are all beef and melt in your mouth.  Delicious!  Mamas Lasagna ($14) also comes served in a skillet and the portion is large and covered in Mamas Gravy and Meat Sauce.  This Lasagna delivered on presentation and flavor.  The Greg Salas Carne Asada Pizza ($16) is a Carne Asada Burrito on a Pizza.  This is a flavor bomb that is so good.  Served with fresh Cilantro from the garden next to the patio dining room.  The Rell Sunn Margarita Pizza ($15) is simple with only Tomato Sauce, Cheese and Basil.  This pizza delivers on flavor and is delicious.  The Duke Kahanamoku Supreme Pizza ($16) is one of my favorites here.  Pepperoni, Sausage, Onions and Peppers with tasty Tomato Sauce. I could eat this Pizza every single day.  Last up was Mamas Bread Pudding ($9 w/Ice Cream).
Oh my goodness this is a sweet and flavorful ending to an incredible meal.  Got to admit this is my favorite pizza joint in Hawaii and I love the Hawaii athletics theme and Wall of Fame.  Place is cool, hip and is full of so much Hawaii sports history.  Oh and I should tell my readers that I own the place so may be a little bias.  Actually I do love all of the food here.  Would not serve it if I did not think it was the best.

THE OLD SPAGHETTI FACTORY

THE OLD SPAGHETTI FACTORY
HONOLULU, HAWAII

Going to the Old Spaghetti Factory brings back fond memories for me. Over 25 years ago while living in San Diego we would get 10-15 of us together on a Friday night and fill a large table at the Spaghetti Factory.  Why you ask?  Well at that time it was dirt cheap.  We could enjoy pasta and beer for around $10 per person.  It was a great deal for a bunch of broke guys and girls wanting to go out for a good time.  While the prices have risen a bit, the Old Spaghetti Factory has not changed much.  Still a good place for families and large groups.  Make sure you make a reservation here.  There seems to always be a wait if you don't.  Parties of 15-25 the norm here.  We had reservations and despite a big line in the reception area we were seated right on time.  The young staff is very friendly and efficient.  We had fresh bread and our drinks in a matter of minutes.  Started with the Sicilian Garlic Cheese Bread ($6.29).  Fresh bread topped with garlic and three melted cheese.  Served toasted with a side of Marinara Sauce.  Not bad.  The Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce ($9.99) was a huge disappointment.  It looks and smells like Clam Chowder poured on pasta.  The sauce is bland, creamy and really lacking any clam flavor.  The menu describes the sauce as being for the Clam Lover - with hints of wine, fresh garlic, green peppers, onion and parsley.  Tastes nothing like the description.  My wife could not eat it and instead shared my plate of the Pot Pourri ($11.29).  The Pot Pourri is a sampler of four sauces; Mizithra Cheese and Browned Butter, Meat, Clam and Marinara. This turned out to be a pretty good way to go.  I liked the Mizithra Cheese mixed with the Marinara.  Worst of the four was the Clam Sauce.  All of the pasta dishes come with your choice of soup or salad.  We all took the salads.  Basically a bowl of lettuce with a few croutons.  The girls enjoyed the Kids Meal Pasta with Meat Sauce ($5.99).  This is the key to the Old Spaghetti Factory.  You can get a complete meal that includes bread, salad, pasta, drink and dessert for $6.  We all finished with the Spumoni Ice Cream that is included with the meal price.  Nice flavor but very soft.  Link to menu below.

THE BRIGANTINE SEAFOOD - SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

BRIGANTINE SEAFOOD
SAN DIEGO, CA

I had dined at the Brigantine for years when living in Cardiff by the Sea. It was nice to return many years later with good friends and a table full of great kids. My friend Darryl, his wife Heather and twin boys and girl joined my family and best friend Toye for one of the best dinners of our trip. We feasted on a variety of seafood dishes and enjoyed the best fish taco around. That is right. THE BEST FISH TACO AROUND IS AT THE BRIGANTINE. The fish tacos are off the hook awesome. The batter is light and the sauce is perfect. Cannot figure out why these fish tacos are so good. Everyone agrees that the Brigantine makes the best fish tacos ($7). Our meal started with fresh Fanny Bay, Hood Canal and Blue Point Oysters ($24). These babies were fresh and super delicious. We followed the fresh oysters with 12 Oyster Shooters ($33). Small oysters served in a shot glass with cocktail sauce and horseradish. Simply perfect combination of flavors. I tried a cup of clam chowder ($4.25). It was very thick and filled with clams. Has a distinct smokey taste. The garlic cheese bread ($5) was covered in a ton of cheese and a hit at the table. The calamari strips ($8) were good but nothing to write home about. We also tried Steamed Clams ($13). Kind of small and served in a ton of broth. The kids Mac and Cheese was a hit ($5), but the adult version of Mac and Cheese with Alaskan King Crab ($18) was the bomb. The kids also enjoyed Fish n' Chips ($5) and Sliders ($5). The kids loved everything. Round out the night with the Oysters Brigantine ($15) and a piece of the Brigs famous Mud Pie ($6.50) and you have a great meal served amongst good friends and family. Our waitress (Tara) was great and handled the large table well. THE FISH TACOS HERE ARE A TASTE OF HAWAII FAVORITE.
