Insider Tip:  When the Pro Shop Attendant at Ko'olau Golf Course offers you 24 golf balls for $27, BUY THEM!  Believe me you are going to need them.  Put away the ProV1's and other expensive balls and bring or buy balls that cost about a buck or less.  I sprayed over a dozen balls on this course in one round and was very happy that I bought the 24.  Ko'olau has been rated the Toughest Course in America at times and it lives up to that status in a big way.  Most holes here are blind where you cannot see the pin with big swings to the right and left.  Add a dozen ravines or so that you have to hit over and narrow fairways surrounded by heavy forest and you have an adventure at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains.  I call it golfing at Jurassic Park and one of the toughest golf challenges of my life.  Catch this place on a clear and sunny day and it also one of the most beautiful courses in Hawaii.  You really have to "think" when playing this course.  It demands your attention and brains.  Try pulling out a driver on most holes and you will be in trouble.  Laying up is pretty smart unless you can hit precise and straight shots which I cannot.  As much as this course frustrates me, I still like it.  I take the attitude that this is practice for me and just try to keep the ball in play.  The darn ravines kill me.  They are everywhere.  On the 18th hole you need to clear two ravines to get to the green which is surrounded by bunkers.  I was so happy when this round ended.  Must say the staff here is awesome.  The Pro Shop guy was a true gentlemen as was the Starter and Marshal.

The Ko'olau Golf Course in Kaneohe has been named the "toughest in the nation" by many golf publications.  Why my friends put a lousy golfer like me on this course is beyond me, but I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  This is a beautiful course set against Oahu's Ko'olau Mountains.  The views are incredible.  This course is tough.  Every hole is an experience and challenge.  Most holes are blind where you cannot see the flag.  Almost all have ravines that you need to clear and the fairways are very narrow which means there is no room for error.  My advice is to bring a lot of golf balls.  Don't bother bringing the expensive balls here.  Use the freebees and balls you find on other courses or the junk ones your family gives you for Christmas.  Believe me - you will lose balls.  Lots of them.  This is a course that demands concentration.  You must think about every shot and lay up all the time.  You cannot just go up and whack it like I do here.  You will find yourself using irons rather than your Driver on many holes as there usually is a ravine or hazard directly on the way to the green.  The greens are small too.  Usually surrounded by bunkers strategically placed to consume your ball.  I started to enjoy the challenge after a few holes.  The pure natural beauty of the course keeps you going even if you are hitting an eight....or nine.   This course is worth playing just for the views and scenery.  Really gives you a different perspective of Oahu and makes you feel very lucky to be living and playing golf in Hawaii.  Golfers with me who usually shoot in the high 80's or low 90's did not break 100.  One shot 101.  My score was 100 plus...plus...plus...
Customer service here was great with Nick from Pro Shop providing us with information and thanking us for our business.  Course Ambassadors were also very nice and helpful.
