My second visit to Tamber Bey was totally different than the first visit earlier this year.

The first visit included a wine tasting with the owner Barry Waitte at his home.  After meeting Barry he invited us to a private tasting at his ranch along with a few local winery owners.  That was pretty much the best wine tasting experiences of my life and gave me my first introduction to enjoying private tastings with winery owners.  On this trip, Barry was out of town so we scheduled a tasting at his ranch.  Our driver set it up so we could enjoy a box lunch at the winery since we were on a tight schedule.  When you arrive at Barry's Sundance Ranch and the home of Tamber Bey wines you are transported to a different planet where the environment can feel surreal.  The setting is a large barn with horse stables set against the backdrop of the Napa mountains.  Once you enter the stables the whole world seizes to exist.  Feels like you are on a farm in the Midwest but you are really in the heart of Napa Valley.  Pretty darn cool.  We were greeted by our host for the day who's name was Cher.  Cher explained that she had been working at Napa wineries for over twenty years and happily showed us a map of the different wine making regions as she explained the Tamber Bey wines.  We started with some light white wines and then moved onto the reds.  Tamber Bey wine is good stuff and there is plenty in my wine cooler at home right now plus more on the way.  Cher was an incredible host with a bright smile and laugh that made us laugh.  Every time Cher would say something funning she would start laughing.  Her laugh is infectious and made us all keep laughing.  If you visit Tamber Bey ask for Cher.  You will not be disappointed.  Our wine tasting concluded with a terrific box lunch that our driver had arranged to be delivered.  The boxes contained incredible sandwiches on some great tasting bread.  I got the Roast Beef and my friend got Turkey.  My Roast Beef Sandwich was amazingly good.  So was the Pasta Salad that came with it.  This was a very fun and relaxing wine tasting set in a beautiful environment.  I highly recommend a visit to Tamber Bey and the Sundance Ranch.  Below are two previous posts on Tamber Bey including my visit with winery owner Barry Waitte.

We arrived at the Tamber Bey Ranch not knowing what to expect.  The day before we were lucky to meet and sample wines with winery owner Barry Waitte.  Barry was nice enough to invite us to a private tasting that he was having at his ranch in Calistoga the next day.  The event was pretty exclusive and featured about a half dozen tables where local winery owners provided samples of their wines.  What a pleasure it was to drink wine and learn the personal stories of how these people came to Napa and started small family wineries.  One gentlemen was an architect from New York.  Another woman who now owns a winery with her husband from Southern California was from Iran.  We sampled wines, talked story and had one of the best days of my life here.  Truly an amazing experience at Tamber Bey.  Thanks so much Barry!

Life has its unexpected moments.  Some good and some bad.  When we arrived at the home of the owner of Tamber Bay little did I know that it would be one of life's coolest moments.  All I could think of is how I wish my Dad could be with me to experience the moment in time and experience.  As we entered the private estate of winery owner Barry Waitte we were not at the Ranch that is the home to his winery and tasting room, but at his residence which is nestled amongst 11 acres of vineyards.  Barry greeted us himself holding the coolest little wine holder filled with three glasses of wine for his guests.  We knew nothing about Barry and figured he was just a wine salesmen making us comfortable before the pour.  I don't think he even mentioned that he owned the house, land and vineyard but we soon figured it out after he graciously walked us through his vineyard and explained the grape growing process and fact that he had purchased 11 acres here and another 60 acres up the road in Calistoga.  Barry guided us to his back porch that was set amongst one of the most beautiful backyards you could ever imagine.  There was water and trees that looked like great fireworks exploding in the perfect Napa weather on a February afternoon.  Everything here was perfect.  The landscaping, the weather the table and the decor.  Barry proceeded to pour his wines one by one.  Each one was a banquet of flavor.  He demonstrated a new wine opener that reseals the bottle to preserve freshness and we walked slowly through the story of how be came to Napa and became a wine maker.  Turns out Barry met a guy named Steve Jobs and took a job with Apple.  From Apple he started his own business and then sold it to an Internet company called AOL.  All the time Barry followed his love for horses and traveled the world doing endurance horse racing.  He became quite famous and good at the sport and met his lovely bride while purchasing a horse in Los Angeles.  They both raced horses and had a love for wine so they did what anybody would do and bought a 60 acre horse ranch in Napa and established their own wine brand and also created a wine making facility that can make wine for dozens of other small vinery owners.  What a story and here we are drinking wine with Barry at his home.  On his back porch, in his back yard on the most perfect of Napa days.  As the sun began to set I did not want this day to end.  Luck for us Barry invited us to his ranch the next day for a private wine tasting with about six other wine makers.
