STRAIGHT OUTTA HUSK

STRAIGHT OUTTA HUSK
WAIMALU SHOPPING CENTER
98-020 KAMEHAMEHA HWY
AIEA, HI
808-765-1990

I was excited to finally get out to Aiea to try Straight Outta Husk as I have been following their success and stories on Instagram for over a year.  Arrived just after noon on a Saturday and the parking lot was a traffic jam.  Had to wait patiently in a long line just to park.  Turns out the Waimalu Shopping Center is a giant food court with restaurant after restaurant serving up pretty much every kind of food you can think of in Hawaii.  We ordered at the window from a friendly gal who took our order.  Four Tacos, Tamale and Beans and Rice with tip was $55.  They were out of Carne Asada which would have put this meal over $60 for lunch.  Went inside Palama Market to find all of the tables taken with customers grinding Tacos and Burritos.  Waited a bit and got a table.  Food was brought out by really nice boy who was smiling and saying to ask for him if we needed anything else.  Great service!  Now the big surprise that I never saw coming.....tried all of the Tacos and the Tamale, Beans and Rice.  Didn't like any of it.  The Birria Taco was probably the best but the Consommé had no flavor.  Super bland and added nothing to the Taco.  The Carnitas was dry and also pretty bland.  Adding Hot Sauce did little to improve the flavor.  We both did not like the Chicken Mole at all.  Very sweet and the odor of cinnamon which I found overpowering.  The Tamale was huge with about 1/2 and inch of Masa.  Pretty much a Masa bomb with very little filling.  Kills me to write this because I was really wanting to love this place.  Didn't finish the food and left hungry and disappointed.

FIDELS LITTLE MEXICO

FIDELS LITTLE MEXICO
SOLANA BEACH, CA

Next to Juanitas and Roberto's for Mexican take out, I have eaten at Fidels probably more times than any other sit down restaurant.  Back in the day this was the place to go for great food at very affordable prices.  Going back now, the place seems larger.  There is a full bar and seating inside and outside. The food is still delicious.  Large portions, great prices and atmosphere.  I have always loved the salsa served with the chips here.  It taste just like old times.  Not spicy but full of flavor.  Love the salsa.  I rolled with a Shredded Beef Taco and Chicken Tostada Plate with Rice and Beans.  The Taco was filled with shredded beef and topped with cheese, lettuce and pico.  One of my favorite tacos ever.  The Tostada was just as good, but the shell got soggy and I had to eat it with a fork.  The rice and beans here are top notch.  My friend had half of a Tostada and it was huge.  A full plate load.  He loved it.  Another friend enjoyed the Tamale which he said was "great". This was a great meal.

TITO'S TACOS - CULVER CITY

TITO'S TACOS
CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA

We drove by Tito's Tacos and saw a line before 11:00 am.  We drove by again and saw a line even longer in the evening.  My Dad's wife Heide (bless her soul), said that we had to try a Tito's Taco.  I am always in search of a good taco and was more than happy to stop in.  Perhaps this would be the one stop that would "wow" me during our visit to California.  We began by waiting in line outside, but then discovered that there was indoor seating and another line of windows inside where it was warm.  Without hesitation, Heide went to the window and ordered just about everything on the menu for us to try.  Tacos, burrito, tamale, chili, two kinds of enchiladas and a weeks worth of chips and salsa.  THANK YOU HEIDE.  This was awesome.  I immediately attacked the tacos ($1.75 plus $.60 for cheese).  A crunchy taco that is filled with shredded beef and then deep fried.  Toss on some lettuce, cheese and their fresh salsa and you have one of the best tacos in Los Angeles.  I absolutely loved my Tito's Taco.  They have a crunch and flavor that is addicting.  No wonder people line up in droves and happily carry out boxes of these Mexican treats.  It is amazing to see box after box of tacos coming out of the kitchen.  The rows of tacos are placed in a box and then covered with a lid for save travel.  Tito's does it right.  They have a very limited menu.  When you order a taco, it comes one way.  Beef with or without cheese.  Thats it.  We also tried the burrito.  This is a large tortilla filled with pure meat and sauce.  Nothing else unless you request beans or cheese.  It was good, but the tacos really kept my mouth watering.  The Chicken and Beef Enchiladas were good but pretty much taste the same.  The Tamale was mostly Masa so it was not my favorite.  The Chili was good.  I think it is the same meat and sauce used in the burrito.  The beans and rice here are excellent and the fresh salsa is really good.  The chips are made fresh and served warm.  I could sit there and eat these things for hours.
