We loved our lunch at Hualani's on Kauai.  What a beautiful spot with great food and service.  We started with the Ahi Tuna Sashimi and it was gone before you could enjoy the view.  I had the Kalbi Lamb and loved it.  The Poke Bowl was a hit with my Daughter and her boyfriend loved the Burger.  Actually thought about coming back for dinner as everyone liked the food and service.  Great place!

HOURS:  Daily 11AM - 8PM

A very rare day out to have lunch with my Daughter.  She wanted to visit Kakaako and try Arvo for some Avocado Toast.  I looked at the menu at Arvo and everything was served on thick bread.  No go for my low carb diet so I walked across the way to Redfish Poke Bar.  This is kind of a Chipotle style place to enjoy Poke.  You start by choosing your Poke, Rice and then get a few options for toppings with many more available for purchase.  I opted for greens in place of rice and ordered one scoop of California Roll Poke along with a scoop of fresh Ceviche with Hamachi.  This was $14.  You get one choice of a side so I picked Cucumbers.  Added Onions for $1 extra.  The service was excellent and fast.  In and out in just minutes.  Enjoyed the Poke!

AVOCADO AHI POKE BOATS

DINNER AT HOME

Made some delicious Avocado Poke Boats with super fresh Ahi.  So lucky to be able to buy fresh Ahi
year round in Hawaii.  First I made the Poke with Ahi, White Onion, Green Onion, Seaweed Flakes, Hawaiian Salt, Soy Sauce and Sesame Oil.  I let the Poke chill and then placed it in the Avocados.
One version with White Rice and the other Keto style with just vegetables.

FRESH AHI POKE BOWL

FRESH AHI POKE BOWL
DINNER AT HOME

With fresh fish in Hawaii being at all time low prices due to restaurants and hotels being closed, I picked up an amazing piece of fresh Ahi for around $10.  Made some darn good Poke.

SHAKA BOWLS FOOD TRUCK

SHAKA BOWLS FOOD TRUCK
SOMEWHERE IN HONOLULU

Found the Shaka Bowls Food Truck parked near the State Capitol during the Make A Wish Jingle Bell Run so we decided to try a bowl of Poke.  I would say it was good, fresh but not great.  Team working the truck was great and all smiles.

My first two visits to Tin Roof Maui were great.  Food was delicious.  Decided to try the Poke Bowl on this visit and was surprised to find that it sucked.  Probably one of the worst Poke Bowls I have ever tasted.  The Poke was tasteless, tough and chewy.  There was little or no seasoning on the fish or rice.  With each bite I said to myself "this sucks".  I asked a co-worker who ordered the same Poke Bowl what he thought and he said it was terrible and then showed me his bowl with pieces set aside because they were uneatable.  He actually poured Soy Sauce, Hot Sauce and something else he had in the refrigerator on top of his Poke to try to add flavor.

Found a great little spot to pick up fresh Poke, Sashimi and Seafood on Kauai.  The Fish Express satisfied my Daughters craving for a Poke Bowl.  Pretty cool Poke Bar where you order Poke and then top it with a variety of toppings including Imitation Crab, Cucumbers, Pickled Cabbage, Ginger and Seaweed.  Also a variety of sauces.  I went for straight Sashimi and loved it.  Also bought some Smoked Marlin and my only complaint was that I didn't buy more.  Stuff was so good and we took it on a NaPali Coast tour the next day.

After my first visit to Pa'ina Cafe several years ago I vowed never to return.  Hated the place and have managed to stay away for a long time.  When my Daughter begged me for a Poke Bowl and insisted that we go to Pa'ina Cafe I gave in and we went back to the place that gives me mayonnaise nightmares (see older blog post below).  I remember not liking the place because it seemed a bit dirty and when we entered this time I felt the same way.  As we stood in line my only thought was how fast could we get out of this place.  The place was hot and to me uncomfortable.  My girls ordered Small Poke Bowls ($7.25) and added Furikake (.50).  The Bowls come with White or Brown Rice.  They said the Poke did not taste fresh and was not a high quality.  Some of the fish was brown and both of them said they did not care for the flavor.  Said that Poke from Foodland was ten times better.  I went for the Italiano Sandwich ($7.95) which on my first visit was drenched in mayonnaise.  This time I specifically requested no mayo.  The sandwich was not bad and the the bread was light and fresh.  Not a bad sandwich this time.  I think it is safe to say that we will never return to Pa'ina Cafe.  I know I will not.
